CSU Thunderbirds to Make 3-Game Trek Into Hew Mexico During Yeek The College of Southern Utah Thunderbirds have had a long layoff iiom the basketball court, but they will make up for lost time this week when they take a 2,200 mile trek into New Mexico Mexi-co on a three-game swing. Coach Boyd Adams and his T-Birds T-Birds played their last game on December 23 when they defeated the San Diego Marine Recruit Depot for the consolation championship cham-pionship of the California Western West-ern Tournament. However, members of the squad have been back on campus since December 31 In preparation for the swing Into New Mexico. The three games Include contests con-tests with New Mexico Western University at Silver City, N. M., Saturday, Jan. 9. On Monday, Jan. 11, they swing to Portales, N. M., which Is on the Eastern border of the state, and wind up Tuesday evening, Jan. 12, at New Mexico Highlands University, at Lus Vegas, N. .. Coach Adams and his 12 man squad will leave Friday. fwo Injuries may plague the squad this week. Joe Castillo, wno has seen considerable action on the guard line, Injured his hand in drills this week and may , not make the trip. Mel Wads-worth, Wads-worth, who set a new individual game rebound record for the T-Birds T-Birds in California in December, is suffering an ankle injury and may not be at full strength. A report earlier this week that YVad.sworth had been lost to the txiuad owing to scholastic ineligibility inelig-ibility was erroneous, Coach Adams stated. He is registered for winter quarter and is ready to go through the remainder of the season. For the past week and one-half the T-Birds have been concentrat-Ing concentrat-Ing on a dlviation in the offensive of-fensive patterns. Lack of speed on the forward line has warranted warrant-ed the change. Coach Adams Indicated that hi offensive change tends to pull the forwards closer to the basket to place them in a more favorable favor-able position for rebounds. Good heighth in Wadsworth and Rod Oliver at the forwards should produce better point output in elisor, he reasoned. Previously the forwards have been required to move from a deeper position for offensive rebounds and the lack of speed has made it impossible impos-sible for them to have good court position for rebounds. Of the three teams the T-Birds will meet this week, Adams rates New Mexico Highland as the toughest competition. The Highlands High-lands crew have good experience, post a fine record for the past two years and are led by the leading rcbounder in the vicinity. Eastern New Mexico at Portales Por-tales gets his second nod with New Mexico Western rated third. CSU met Western during the 1963-64 season and split with them on a home and home basis. AH three games will be broadcast broad-cast over radio station KSUB. Game time is expected to be 8 p. m. each evening, Coach Adams stated. |
