Show Dairy Group Recognizes Historic Background The Iron County area in June) will join the state and nation in honoring the pioneers of the dairy industry through 350 years in America and 110 years in Utah. "A highlight of Utah's observance observ-ance of June Dairy Month this year will be the tracing of the history of dairying," said Tom L. Emery, general chairman. In charge of Iron county observances observ-ances are Wallace D. Sjoblom, county agent, and Ross W. Sargent, Sar-gent, board member of the American Amer-ican Dairy Association of Utah. Mr. Emery said that America's dairy industry began 350 years ago with the founding of James, town in Virginia. Jamestown's first settlers brought supplies of butter and cheese with them from England in 1607, and the first cows arrived in 1611. In that year. Lord Deleware, one of the colonists, wrote: "Mllke being a great nourishment and refresh-ing refresh-ing to our people. . ." This year "Refresh with Milk" is theme of messages of the American Dairy Association nd the Utah Milk Foundation. Utah's dairy industry began Uln 1947 with the arrival of the first pioneers in Salt Lake Valley under the leadership of Brig-ham Brig-ham Young. With the first company com-pany were 90 oxen, 41 cows nd three bulls ond seven calves. The Infant industry received a big boost with the arrival of the second sec-ond company of immigrants In Salt Lake Valley on Sept. 19, 1817. They brought with them 2,213 oxen and 887 cows. Counties of the state are now in the process of selecting their dairy princesses. County winners will compete for the state title In televised finals In Salt Lake City In September. |
