Show Cedar City Residents Appear'with Featured Musicians In the May 20 Issue of Life Magazine two Cedar City residents, resi-dents, students at the University Univer-sity of California at Los Alleles, were among those featured in tha magazines' commentary on the UCLA method of studying. They are Jimmy and Dorothy Jones, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elton Jones of Cedar City. Jimmy and Dorothy are members mem-bers of the "Gamelon Udan Nas" group, a unique Javanese Music organization. Jimmy and Dorothy are the only members in the group who don't have degrees in muslcoloy, most of the group being either professors of music at UCLA or professional musicians. musi-cians. They were accepted Into Gamelon because of their back-ground back-ground in music, and interest in ethnomuslcology. Dr. Mantle Hood, who organized organ-ized Gamelan Udan Nas, is at present studying In Indonesia on a one year Ford Foundation grant In spite of Dr. Hood's absence, ab-sence, the group meets regularly for rehearsals under the direction direc-tion of Mrs. Shirley Hood, Dr. Hood's wife. This UCLA group is one of two in the United States. The other Gamelon is In Washington, D. C, and its members are Javanese, with the Javanese Embassy. , |
