Show HOW BIG IS BIG? Everything today is big. When we speak of finance, inevitably we ta" about big finance, not in the measly hundreds of dollars, nor thousands, but hundreds of thousands or millions. When we speak of debts we inevitably think of the national debt and this runs beyond the millions of dollars :into the billions completely beyond comprehension. "When we speak of building in this area we can contemplate con-template the Glen Canyon Dam and that mammoth construction con-struction fete now under way nearby on the Colorado River. When we speak of power, we think of the atom and "hydrogen bomb. Russia exploded one with an estimated power of 50 Megatons. This has been explained as equivalent equiv-alent to 1000 bombers conducting an air raid mission with conventional weapons every night for 30 years this would equal the 50 megaton bomb. Everything is big, big, big. What brought all of this to mind is a recent release rrom the Navy Department of the United States of America Ameri-ca concerning the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the world's largest ship, to be delivered on Dec. 20. The eighth Naval vessel to bear the proud name of "Enterprise" is not only a formidable aircraft carrier but also a "floating city." More than 1,100 feet long, displacing displac-ing 85,350 tons, her four-and-one-half acre flight deck -would accommodate four football fields. Her eight nuclear reactors, the largest nuclear power plant ever built, develop devel-op "over 200,000" horsepower to give her a speed of more than 40 miles per hour. ..What does it take to man this new USS Enterprise? " The report indicates a crew of 4,600 sailors and flyers. Yes, we truly live in an age of bigness bigness that is almost unimaginable, yet bigness that is a realiy to be : not only marveled at, but to be coped with as well. |
