Sheldon Johnson, director of bands at Millard High School at Fillmore, and chairman of the region department, indicated that the two-day event was most successful. suc-cessful. He further stated that a number of the participants indicated indi-cated that they had enjoyed the event even more than the annual all-state band activities. Directing the two-day clinic and concert was Dr. Clarence Sawhill, of the University of California Cali-fornia at Los Angeles. Dr. Sawhill has received world renown In the field of music education and Just recently returned from a most successful tour of Europe with his UCLA band. A Utah First Johnson indicated that it is the first time that such an All-Region band activity has been attempted attempt-ed in the region and In the state as well. "We are pioneering this activity,' Johnson said, "and all indications point to the continuation continu-ation of the event in future years. It has really caught on with, these students and band directors direct-ors of our region," he comment ed. An average of 11 students from each of the high schools of the region were In attendance at the event. Financing of the program was by the students themselves. Each of the students paid $3 as a fee for participation and the money was used to re-imburse Dr. Sawhill Saw-hill and meet other commitments of the program. Students to participate were selected se-lected by a committee composed of Johnson, Richard Long, director direct-or bands at Delta, and Dallen Nielo. principal of Millard Hieh School and the regional administrative admin-istrative representatives to music. mu-sic. Each band director In the region re-gion submitted a list of students interested in participating. This list Included the instrument played play-ed and the order of proficiency of the students from each band. The selection committee studied stud-ied the list and selected participants parti-cipants on the basis of need and . proficiency as expressed by the individual band leaders. Audition . Friday the group assembled at the College of Southern Utah auditorium au-ditorium for auditions. Each of the hand directors conducted an audition for each of the sections of the hand and assigned chairs for the band. |
