Show Heavy Snow Storm Hits Area, Roads Closed Accidents Frequent, but Little Snow at Cedar Heavy storms hit southern Utah Sunday and Monday leaving leav-ing as high as 18 Inches of snow in some lower valley areas, but dumping appreciable amounts, reported as high as 30 inches, in the higher elevations of Cedar Mountain. The storm, although heavy at times, somewhat surrounded Cedar Ce-dar City. Only 4 to 5 Inches of snow fell In Cedar City but at Beaver to the north and at New Harmony and the Black Ridge on the south, snow depths were as high as 18 inches. During the two-day storm, moisture recorded record-ed at the Cedar City Airport by the Federal Aviation Agency totaled to-taled .10. In St George it was .44 of an Inche for the same period. At least five accidents were attributed at-tributed to the storm and heavy roads which followed. Two semi-trucks semi-trucks turned over near the Black Ridge, and two cars carrying students stu-dents to St. George turned over after skidding off the highway five and one-half miles north of Cedar City near Webster's Hill. No one was injured in these four accidents. However, two Richfield men were hospitalized Monday from a two-car collision on Cedar City's Main street. Sunday for a short period of time, Highway 89 at the Long Valley Junction was closed to emergency travel only, while 18 Inches of snow was being removed. re-moved. Traffic on Utah 15 through Zton Park was stopped for four hours from 3 to 7 p. m. Sunday afternoon owing to a slide East of the tunnel. The slide covered the road with about six feet of snow for approximately 100 yds. Wetness of the snow made it difficult dif-ficult to remove. Temperatures dropped during the storm but began to rise again Tuesday with the thermometer back into the high 40's and sunshine sun-shine again prevailing. |
