Show Citizens Buck Franchise; To Demand Vote Steps are being taken by a group of citizens to demand a referendum vote on the granting of a 20-year franchise to the Southern Utah Power company by the City Council of Cedar City. No referendum petition has been filed with the city as yet. but we have learned from an authentic source that such action is being considered, and that such a petition will probably be filed in a few days. The council at a meeting on Feb. 19, granted the 20-year franchise fran-chise to the company and adopted adopt-ed an ordinance setting forth the provisions of the franchise, which was published in the Feb. 26 Lssue of the Iron County Record. Proponents of public ownership of power facilities have voiced an objection to the granting of such a franchise, and will apparently ap-parently demand that the voters of the city be given a chance to approve or reject the action. It will be necessary for the group to file a petition with the city signed by about 400 legal voters of Cedar City. The committee com-mittee working on the matter maintains that it can obtain the needed signatures, and will probably file the petition soon. |
