Show Assessment Tax Called for Street Project Notices of assessment on property prop-erty in connection with the city street oiling program are being mailed this week, according to City Manager Thomas Thorsen, and the administration is anxi ous that property owners understand under-stand the situation with regards to the improvement taxes. The assessment against abutting abut-ting property will be only for the seal coating portion of the project. The major portion of the project, the grading and laying of oil mulch will be paid for by the city from B and C road funds coming from the sale of automobile license plates by the state. The total cost of the oiling oil-ing project will be approximately approximate-ly $1.40 per linear foot. Of this amount the city will pay $1.08 from the B and C funds, leaving a balance of 32 cents per foot to be paid for by the owners of abutting property. Since the property on each side of the street must stand its portion of the cast, the cost per foot to each property owner will only be about 16c. This means that the assessment against an average 60 foot lot will be $9.60. The notices being mailed this week contain only the descriptions descrip-tions of the property affected and do not carry any stipulated amount of tax. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 11, 12 and 13, the city board of equalization, composed com-posed of county councilmen Frank Milne, Willard Lunt and Keith Smith, will meet to hear any protests about assessments or to correct any errors in description de-scription of property ownership. After this has been done second sec-ond notices will be mailed to the property owners, this time carrying the definite amount of tax assessed against each piece of property. Property owners will have 15 days after the second notice -is mailed in which they may pay the assessment with out the payment of interest. Since the amount assessed against the property Is small the city officials hope that property owners will take advantage of the opportunity to pay without interest, and thus make this saving sav-ing and also avoid the necessity necessi-ty of bonding to cover the cost of the project, ; The city manager emphasizes that the payment is not to be made after the first notice, and will not become due until the second notice is mailed out. Full cooperation on this matter by the property owners, would be greatly appreciated by the city administration, Mr. Thorsen says. |
