Show Home Demonstration Agent Gives Wash Weight Hints Homemakers who use an automatic auto-matic washer or dryer aften hear Instructions to "wash a 10- lb. load" or "dry a six-pound load." Unless they use a scale, chances are that they don't wash and dry clothing by the pound, remarks county home demonstration Miss Emma Neilson. To help puzzled housewives, Miss Neilson lists these simple rules of the thumb to aid In sizing up a load of clothes: 1. Don't dry more than two large items double sheets, long tablecloths, in one dryer load. Complete the load with smaller items. 2. Three yards of average weight cotton material weigh one pound. Percale sheets one-fourth to one-half pound less per sheet than muslin, depending on size. A six-pound load washes cleaner than a larger load, the home agent says U. S. Department Depart-ment of Agriculture researchers have discovered. Six pounds add up fast, she cautions. Miss Neilson gives these approximate ap-proximate dry weights: One double sheet (muslin), 2 pounds; 1 single shcel (muslin), l'.a pounds; 3 to 4 pillow cases (muslin), 1 pound; 2 turklsh bath towels, average weight 1 pound; 4 to 5 turkish hand towels, tow-els, 1 pound; 15 turkish wash cloths, 1 pound; 5 to 6 dish towels', tow-els', 1 pound; 12 linen napkins, three-fourth pound: 3 dresses, percale or chambray, 1 pound, and 2 men's shirts (broadcloth) 1 pound. |
