Show Interested Parties Study Further Development of Baseball Program With hundreds of youngsters gaining experience and enthusiasm enthus-iasm about baseball in the minor, min-or, Little and Tony League programs, pro-grams, city officials and recreation recrea-tion leaders' have recognized that the city faces the necessity of continuing the program into the higher age groups, particularly the teenagers from 16 through 20 years of age. With young people of this age usually accepting employment during the summer months, the only way a satisfactory recreation recrea-tion program can be arranged for them is to make evening activities activi-ties available. Council Calls for Plans With this in rnind the city council has instructed the community com-munity recreation committee, headed by Farrcll Peterson, to make plans for developing the baseball diamond at the recreation recrea-tion park east of the city for night-time use. The field needs to be .lighted for night time use and should also be planted to grass to provide cleaner and better bet-ter playing facilities. Mr. Peterson will appoint a special committee, composed of civic and church group representatives, represen-tatives, to make plans for the development de-velopment and to follow through to its' completion. It is estimated that lighting and sodding would cost about $15,000 and it is hoped to get the program formulated so that the development could be completed for use during 1956. The first step would be to plant the grass this fall to provide fall and spring growth before the field is used next summer. Entire Area Additions Mr. Peterson points out that the recreation committee will continue con-tinue with its overall program of development of the entire area. Other than lighting and sodding r 1 the basebajl diamond, the next' most important development, he says, is fencing the area as a means of protecting the facilities that are being developed. Following Follow-ing this will probably be the development de-velopment of pk'nic areas in the park, he says. Oiled surfaced driveways throughout the park are also needed. 1 1 The Lions Club is studying the feasibility of undertaking further fur-ther development of the Lions' softball diamond in the park so that it can be brought up to Pony League standards. This wu'l not interfere with the use of the, field for softball, recreation lead-j ers point out. |
