Show Parowan, St. George, Pioche Take Lead In Softball Tourney The Division Two L D S Softball Soft-ball tournament got off to a good start Wednesday night with Parowan, St. George and Pioche moving into the championship bracket with first round victories'. The top game of the opening round found St. George eliminat-j ing the Cedar Stake representative, representa-tive, the Cedar Sixth Ward, in a thrilling pitching battle between be-tween Yorke Nelson, Cedar City, and Hal Sullivan, St. George. The Dixie team won by a 4 to 3 margin. mar-gin. The pitching of Sullivan backed by sensational fielding Chick Terry, well known southern south-ern Utah ath'ete, was just too much for the Cedar City crew. St. George jumped into a lead in the early Innings, only to have Cedar City tie it up, 3 to 3 in the fourth. The two teams battled bat-tled evenly through the remaining remain-ing three innings, but St. George was able to push across one run, enough to win. In the opening game Parowan trounced the Kanab Stake entry from Kanab, winding up the game in four innings by jumping jump-ing into a 17 to 0 lead. Clark Mitchell, pitching for Parowan, turned in a no hit, no run performance. per-formance. Pioche, with Gordon Lytle on the mound, won from Miners-ville Miners-ville by a 14 to 6 margin, scoring scor-ing heavily in the late Innings after the MinersvUle crew had battled them on even terms in the early innings. One more first round game must be played, Las Vegas and Moapa Stakes pairing off in the 7 p. m. encounter tonight. Following Follow-ing this game wUl be a cham-St. cham-St. George and Parowan, with pionship bracket game between starting time set for 8:30 p. m. The final game will pit the Cedar Sixth Ward team against the Cedar Third Ward team. The Third Ward was not originally entered in the tournament, but after the trouncing they took at the hands of Tarowan Wednes-: Wednes-: day, the Kanab players with-I with-I drew and the Cedar team substi-' substi-' tuted. |
