Show Iron County School Head Announces Additions to 1955-56 Teaching Staff Schools of Iron County will open for the 1955-56 calendar year on Tuesday, September 6, Superintendent Ianthus Wright announces. In preparation for the opening classroom sessions on Sept. 6, the teaching staff will gather on Wednesday, August Aug-ust 31, for an orientation session, to be followed by an institute in-stitute to be held for all teachers on Sept. 1, 2, and 3. On Monday, Sept. 5, the teachers will meet in their respective schools for faculty meetings and other preparations. It was announced at the meeting of the board of Education Educa-tion Monday during a discussion of school plans, that all i teaching positions in the county, except one, had been filled. The one vacancy is in the Cedar City High School: the vacancy in the math and science department caused by the resignation of Fay Jacobs, has not been filled as yet. Filling Vacanice3 Teachers assigned in the past month to fill vacancies in the staff include Mrs. Vilate Higbee, former Idaho resident and now of Cedar City, and Mrs. Myrtle Davis, Cedar City, added to the teaching staff of the Cedar West Elementary School, and Mrs. Lillian Lil-lian Chatterley, who had resigned" resign-ed" recently, has changed her mind and will return to her position po-sition this winter. Mrs. Higbee is a graduate of the Utah State Agricultural College and has more than three years teaching experience. Mrs. Davis is a 1955 graduate of the College of Southern South-ern Utah. Mrs. ChatterJey, a CSU graduate, taught in the local district dis-trict last year. Andrew Olds, principal at the Kanarraville school last year, has been transferred to the Cedar City Junior High School to replace Harold Atkin, who resigned. Mrs. Howard Stokes of Cedar City will take over Mr. Old's position at KanarraviUe. Socail Science Instructor Douglas Rus'sel of Ogden, graduate grad-uate of the Brigham Young Uni-verstiy, Uni-verstiy, will teach social science in the Cedar City High School, replacing Richard Gillies, who resigned at the close of school in May. Mr. Schoenfeid has resigned re-signed to devote his entire time to painting. It was reported at the meeting of the board Monday that shortages short-ages of building materials will delay completion of an addition to the Cedar Junior High School, which may cause consderable inconvenience in-convenience during the early part of the school year. Concentrate on Classrooms It had been hoped that the new junior high building which will connect the "bid junior high and elementary buildings, would be completed in time for the opening open-ing of school, but shortages of steel and plaster have held up construction to an extent that this will be impossible. The building build-ing program calls for construction construc-tion of connecting unit, and also for remodeling of classroom and other facilities in the junior high and elementary buildings, to overcome crowded conditions in the junior high school. The contractor con-tractor has agreed to rush work on classroom remodeling so that use of the rooms can start when school opens, with the remainder of the construction job to follow fol-low as rapidly as possible. The school year will include 176 days of classroom instruction, Mr. Wright reported, with the dose of school scheduled for May 24, 195G. The teaching staff, however, how-ever, will remain on the job through May 26 to complete reports. re-ports. Four holiday periods will be Included In the school schedule: sche-dule: October 13 and 14 for the Utah Education Association Convention; Con-vention; November 24 and 25 for a Thanksgiving holiday; a Christmas Christ-mas holiday from noon December 23 to January 3, and a spring vacation va-cation on March 16 and 17. |
