Show Redmen Capture State Championship For the first time in the history of the Cedar City High School the track and field team this year won 'a state championship. Not only did the Redmen win the state meet but they practically made a walk away of the event, capturing 54 points with the their closest competitor, competi-tor, Delta, getting 29 points. Richard Hey wood, sprinting star for the Redmen, garnered the lion's share of the points, capturing two first places. He traveled the 100 yard distance in 10. seconds and the 220 yards in 22.1 to post two first places, in addi tion he won second place In the broad jump and ran a 220 lap in the first place 880 yard relay team. Kenneth Terklns came from behind be-hind in the 880 yard run to capture cap-ture a first place in one of the featured races of the afternoon at Ute stadium. Both relay teams of the Cedar High placed first. The medley team composed of Eld6n Webster, Web-ster, Dayne Gardner, Herb Corry and Perkins walked off with first in the time 3:52.2. The 880 yard relay team also won first place with a time of 1:33.7 This team was composed of Ronald Stratton. Strat-ton. Terry Bolandor, Roger Haycock Hay-cock and Heyvvood. Dan Sheffer, third place entry in the pole vault from Region Six followed closs In the footsteps foot-steps of Ray Swapp of Kanab, In posting second place. Swapp's jump was 12 feet. Herb Corry placed third in the 440 yard run and Ronald Stratton Strat-ton placed third in the javelin. Stratton's third place was behind the record breaking throw of Jim Darnell of Wasatch Academy of 182.3 feet. Darnell also won the 440 event. Region Six teams dominated the meet. Cedar placed'first, Delta Del-ta second, Millard tenth, Kanab 11th, Beaver 18th, and Milford 19th, in the 24 team event. Final team standings of the state track and field meet and points garnered are as follows: Cedar 54, Delta 29, B Y High 28, Lincoln 26 , Wasatch Academy 21, Gunnison 21, Murray 18, Pleasant Grove 17, Cyprus 16, Millard 12, Kanab 9, Lehi 9, Bryce Valley 8, North Sevier, 6, North Emery 6, American Fork 5, Uintah 3, Beaver 3, Milford 3, Richfield 2, Springville 2, Union Un-ion 2, Duchesne 1 and Panguitch 1. |
