Show Redmen Hand Flyers Convincing 32 - 0 Defeat for Sure Division Tie The Cedar City Redmen ran rampant over the Dixie Flyers of St. George last Thursday afternoon, leaving Coach Glen Jackson's Redmen as the only undefeated team in the division and assuring the local crew of at least a tie for division honors. The Redmen scored five touchdowns, two in the first quarter, one in the second and two in the third, and added two extra points to score a 32 to 0 victory over the flyers. Dan Sheffer scored the first TD of the afternoon when he romped 20 yards after collecting a pass from Reed Heywood with less than five minutes of the game marked off. Heywood then pitched to SheJdon Heffner, end, for the extra point. The second score came minutes before the end of the first quarter quar-ter with Dayne Gardner hitting off-tackle from a short distance out. The Redmen capitalized on a good defensive game to run up the lopsided score, Jackson said. Allowing the Flyers to move very little, the ball was controlled by the Redmen through most of the game, particularly the first three quarters. The defense of the Myers My-ers also allowed a wide open attack from the T-formatlon used by the Redmen and Heywood, calling the signals, used spot passes and pltchouts to move the ball consistently. Dixie concentrated mostly on power plays from the single wing formation, into the line, but was unable to move with much suc cess. The offensive play of the Tigers opened up very little and with the exception of two long drives, were held at bay. Before halftime the Redmen had scored again with Kenneth Griener breaking away for a 5 ward run, longest of the day, and pay dirt. Some exceptionally fine blocking downfield cleared a path for Griener and once into the secondary he outran all defenders. de-fenders. Then the Flyers changed their attack and took to the air in the second half, and much to their dismay, two interceptions by the Redmen were converted into touchdowns. Gayle Simkins snagged snag-ged a pitchout midway in the 1 third quarter and raced 40 yards 1 for a score, and Sheffer plunged for the extra point. Later in the same period Griener Intercept-' Intercept-' ed a Dixie pass and romped 52 yards for the fifth and final score of the day. The fourth quarter settled into a ground game with both teams working slowly. The Redmen stuck to the ground to protect their 32 to 0 lead and Dixie, after af-ter a disastrous third quarter In the air confined its offensive to the ground, unsuccessfully. |
