Show Political Lethargy There is something wrong with public interest' in governmental or civic affairs when a city the size of Cedar City permits a municipal election to go by with only one slate of candidates named for the offices to be filled. We have no criticism of the present administration or the candidates named by the Republican party to fill three city council positions. However, we feel that it is a rather unhealthy condition when interest in the affairs of the city becomes so low that no one is interested in filing an opposition ticket. The Democratic party did not name candidates for the three positions on the theory that the elections should be non-partisan. This may be valid reasoning, but it certainly cer-tainly is no reason why something should not be done on a non-partisan basis. Citizens should have the privilege of casting votes for men or women who are going to fill public positions. Of course, it is the fault of those same citizens, through indifference, that at least two candidates are not named for each position to be filled. That indifference is perhaps the real cause of the situation that has developed. Whatever the cause it is an unhealthy situation, and we hope that before another municipal electron comes around the people of the community have awakened to their privilege of franchise and that they recognize the responsibility that goes with it. We feel certain that the leaders and members of the party that has shown interest in-terest enough to make nominations feel that it would lead to better government to have a political contest for positions posi-tions in municipal or any other level of government. |
