'. injc to an announcement made by r. ; 1 - ' r TzJT' Honorable Howard Pylc, former r -n " '''-' .t1'''.! Governor of Arizona. Today there is no church building in the Grand Canyon Villa jro or National Park. "We are not attempting to promote in any way an intcrfaith movement or religious revival. Our only purpose is to provide a place of worship for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who visit the South Kim of the Canyon annually. All religious groups may participate parti-cipate enuitably and without discrimination in its use," Pyle said. The National Park Service maintains the policy that no one particular religious group be permitted to build a church on National Park property. Because of this policy, a unique design for the buildings build-ings and altar arrangement was required. A separate altar will be provided lor each faith. These altars will be mounted on hydraulic lifts which will be operated from a lower level. Each altar can remain completely set up in the basement with all its accoutrements. Within a matter of minutes the chapel can be set for a Catholic, Jewish or Protestant service. ' Separate clergy study rooms for each faith will be conveniently located near the great central chapel. A separate wedding chapel will be available to happy couples who may wish to solemnize their wedding withn view of the magnificence of the Grand Canyon. Wind Chests and pipes for the organ have been arranged to provide pro-vide stereophonic sound. The area behind the altar of the main chapel is designed as a huge curved window affording a beautiful view of the Canyon. The view is aided by the fact the floor slopes downward toward the altar area. Harold E. Wagoner, church architect of distinction, of Philadelphia, Phila-delphia, designed the Shrine of Ages Chapel. In order to meet National Park Service stipulations, the building will be horizontal in movement It will blend with the Canyon and reflect the spirit of the Indian Kiva, It was considered paramount there be a non-denominational atmosphere of worship and reverence. Wagoner, therefore, included no tower or appurtenance relating it to any specific religion in the architecture. The design calls for use of native Arizona stone, augmented by metal construction materials and native word decorations.
