Show Redmen Open Division Play Friday; Leape Race Promises Close Contest The high school basketball race in the Dixie District of Region Re-gion Six gets under way Friday night, with the six teams in the district tangling in games at Cedar Ce-dar City, Orderville and Enterprise'. Enter-prise'. Coach Ray Enu'iestead's Cedar high school Redmen will open their defense of the district championship in a game against the Dixie Flyers to be played in the B A C Memorial fieldhouse. In the other two games the Hurricane Tigers will meet the Valley high Buffalos at Orderville, Order-ville, and the Kanab Cowboys will venture into the lair of the Enterprise Wolves Pre-season games would indicate indi-cate that the six teams in the district will be very evenly matched this year, with the outcome out-come very much in doubt. The Cedar Redmen seem to have compiled com-piled a more impressive pre-season record than the others, but certainly have not looked good enough to be classed as favorites to repeat for the title. The Enterprise Enter-prise Wolves look like strong contenders tor the title this season. sea-son. The team may not be able to win the title but will certain ly be a stumbling block to other teams throughout the season, particularly in games to be played play-ed in the Enterpi.se gym. Cedar and Enterprise should probably be slight favorites for their opening games, with the game between Valley and Hurricane Hur-ricane very much a toss up. The Valley team shows considerable promise, and will be tough for any team in the small Orderville gym, if not on the other floors of the circuit. Coach Englestead will probably probab-ly open the league race Friday with a starting lineup composed of Don Ray Melling, Lawrence Ashdown, YVendlo Holmes, Ray Stephenson and Keith Cooley, with J. N. Webster and Billy Nae-gle Nae-gle ready for early action, and perhaps crowding the others for start. ng positions Two juniors, Steven Lunt and Rodney Prisbrey, will see considerable consid-erable action throughout the season, sea-son, and to augment the squad Coach Englestead has a group of sophomores, who may not see much action in tegular games, but will undoubtedly figure prominently in the coach's plans for next year. Jerry Frame, one of this group, may see considerable consider-able action as the season progresses. pro-gresses. In the second round of play, on Jan. 9, Cedar will travel to Kanab, Ka-nab, Dixie will play at Orderville Order-ville and Enterprise will go to Hurricane. The regular season play will come to an end on March 6, with the district t.tle winners gaming a place in the state tournament, and the second and third place meet the Millard district second and third place teams for the third state tournament berth from Region Six. The state tournament this year will be played in the new Brig-ham Brig-ham Young University fieldhouse at Provo. |
