Show Civic Projects, Improvements Listed In Chamber of Commerce Report As the year draws to a close the board of directors of the Cedar Ce-dar City Chamber of Commerce has issued a report of the activities activi-ties of the organization carried on during 1952. The board is composed of representatives rep-resentatives from business, industrial, in-dustrial, labor, livestock and agricultural ag-ricultural interest, and the various vari-ous groups of the community, including in-cluding veterans, business and professional women, Elks, Jay-cees, Jay-cees, Kiwanlans, Rotarians, Lions and the schools. The directors direc-tors have met once each week throughout the year, and the results re-sults of the efforts are reflected in the following report: A Retail Merchants committee was organized for the purpose of promoting Cedar City as a shopping center. The Chamber of Commerce has cooperated with this committee in the promotion of better business relations, Sweepstakes Days, Blue Card System, etc. The Chamber of Commerce has cooperated financially wth the following: Art Exhibit, two B A C scholarships, High school band, R 0 T C unit, sponsors corps unit, Iron County fair. Junior Chamber of Commerce Christmas lighting. The Chamber of Commerce participated in the financing of the colored folder advertising Southern and Eastern Utah which was made up and dis-t.ibuted dis-t.ibuted by the Associated Civic club of which Kumen Jones of Cedar City is president. It has had under survey for some time the possibility of a new garbage- dump site and the recommendations from the Chamber of Commerce committee have been turned over to the City Council for further study. At the present time preparations prepara-tions are being completed to the transmittal of ownership to the Chamber of Commerce from the Claude Blevins estate of two large road signs, one located at Panaca Junction on Highway 93, advertising Cedar City, and the other at the junction of Highways High-ways 89 and 14. The Chamber of Commerce assisted as-sisted the road program for Cedar Ce-dar and Iron County as it was set up by the County Commission and State Road Commission. The Iron Mountain road from the Junction U-56 to Desert Mound and also Iron Springs has been completed this year and the road from Beryl junction to Beryl has been given No. 1 priority to be graded or graveled this year and brought to an oil surface finish next year. A special committee was appointed ap-pointed to investigate the possibilities possi-bilities of Television in our area. T. V. Radio Service Corporation reported that It hoped within the near future that it may be possible pos-sible with special equipment to receive a signal which could be rebroadcast to Cedar City. However, How-ever, until such method of programming pro-gramming is devised it appears to be an impossibile economic problem to put Television into our area immediately. The Chamber of Commerce cooperated co-operated with the city officials In the signing of petitions to Install a semaphore at the intersection inter-section of West Center and 300 West streets which is a dangerous danger-ous school crossing. This has j been approved and will be installed in-stalled within the near future. 10,000 pamphlets have been printed, for distribution to the tourists and visitors to our community, com-munity, calling their attention to the many scenic attractions in and near Cedar City. 2,000 of these folders were sent with the ROTC sponsors corps for distribution distribu-tion in Los Angeles. 3,000 pamphlets pam-phlets will be circulated at the National Boy Scouts convention which will be held in Los Angeles An-geles this coming year. A new Chamber of Commerce sign will soon be erected at the corner of Harding avenue and Main street. This is a large 10-foot 10-foot sign showing the location of the Chamber office directing people to where they can obtain tourist information or other information. in-formation. One of the iargest projects that the Chamber of Commerce has had under way is the construction con-struction of two U.rge signs to be erected at the north and south entrances of the city. Designed by Bob Gardner, Cedar City architect, ar-chitect, they will carry all insig-nias insig-nias of the civic and fraternal organizations, and will contain a large interchangeable section to insert advertising for different differ-ent functions going on in Cedar City. The Chamber of Commerce has been carrying jn a radio program pro-gram for the traveling tourists, advertisinf the area daily. The office is continuallv an swering requests and mailing out hundreds of pieces of literature each week throughout the United States and foreign countries to prospective visitors to this area. The board has worked with the city in attempting to secure off main street parking areas which it hopes will bring results in the near future. Cooperated with the Iron County Coun-ty agent in the Lscalante Valley tour which was held July 31. This tour was very successful, in-as in-as much as it helped to acquaint ac-quaint our people of the work being done in the Escalante Valley Val-ley of which we can all be very proud. |
