Show Council Approves Appointment of Assistant Police Chief As a means of lightening the burden of responsibility on the chief of police, and of placing an officer with responsibility rank in charge of the police force at all times, the city council has approved the appointment of an assistant chief. Charles "Chuck" Wells, who headed the police department during Chler A. H. Lambert's absence ab-sence while attending FBI school earlier this year, has been named as assistant to Mr. Lambert. . A change is the base pay for police officers has also been made, which at the present time is $240 per month for each of the officers except the chief, assistant assist-ant chief and traffic officer. Be-ginn.ng Be-ginn.ng at the first of the year, the officers will receive SO a month, with the stipulation that after serving for one year each officer will receive an advance in pay. The other three officers will receive re-ceive a "cost of living" pay increase in-crease that was provided in the budget of expenditures for 1953 adopted last week by the city council. There has been some talk of reducing the police force from six to five officers, but to date no action has been taken on the matter. |
