Show Second Number On Music Arts Series Pleasing To Patrons (By Wm. H. Manning) Scoring success in the second i.f-fering i.f-fering on the Music Arts seres Suzanne Sten, mezzo-soprano, san,j uerway Into the hearts of a fair-slzed fair-slzed audience Monday nlht. am eight hundred school students or Tuesday afternoon. It Is a long time since a visiting vocalist has so universally pleased her audience as did Miss Sten, and her accomplished husband accompanist, accom-panist, who gave matchless support to the well balanced and varied program pro-gram of songs. While her voice Is not of the robust mezzo quality, It was sufficiently suffi-ciently robust for her operatic numbers but her phrasing was done with great care and always with telling effect. In the first group, the Cheriblno's aria her voice seemed to lack the lyric brilliance necessary for this delightfu number. In her second group, Mendelssohn's "Auf Fluezel des Zezanges", she really captured her audience, and sent her listen ers Into ecstasy. In this number with matchless accompaniment of her husband, Leo Taubman, and the singer's intelligent phrasing the most delightful Interpretation Hie writer has heard given this song In many years. "Habenera" from Carmen and "Mon Coeur s'ouna a ta Voix" from Samson and Delilah were well rendered, ren-dered, the former with plenty of delightful vitality. Of the two Spanish Span-ish numbers Miss Sten was at her best In El Vlto. In which bhe vigorous vigor-ous vitality of the Introduction was so well displayed by Mr. Taubman. At the conclusion Miss Sten was recalled four times and responded with four old favorites. In spite the chilly auditorium Miss Sten radiated ra-diated a warmth that made the audience forget any discomfort. |
