Show Armid Forces Brush Up on Dress for State Occasions WASHINGTON. Cocked hats, ornamental swords and gold lace emerged from moth ball status with an authorization from Secretary Sec-retary of Defense Forrestal for officers of the armed forces to wear evening dress uniforms on state occasions. White House receptions and state functions both in the United States and abroad again will see the fancy formal garb laid aside In 1940 while the nation prepared for war. Forrestal, on orders from President Truman, also directed the army, air force and navy to begin a joint study of an "appropriate" "appro-priate" evening dress uniform for all three services. President Truman is reported to have noticed at the Rio de Janeiro conference the contrast between dazzling foreign uniforms uni-forms and the more sober American Amer-ican armed forces dress then being worn. |
