Show f ARCHBISHOP CHAPELLE'S WORK Archbishop Chapelle has begun his work of adjusting the church in the Philippines to the new conditions -with which it is surrounded in those islands. That the Archbishop's work is a difficult diffi-cult one is obvious to all who have given consideration to the situation there. We are informed that the church authorities au-thorities in Luzon are anxious to maintain main-tain the existing customs to which Spanish ecclesiastics have accustomed the people. It is not necessary to exploit ex-ploit these customs. One thing is clear, viz.r that they -would not be pleasing to ; the American Catholics and American people in general. And inasmuch "a ' the sovereignty of the United States is likely to be permanently exercised in the Philippines, it would seem essen- ! tial that the customs now existing there should be conformed, as far as possible, to American ideas. We may I av that this is imperative, for therq are many customs indulged in by ecclesiastics ec-clesiastics in the Philippine islands that would not be tolerated in the United States for an instant. Archbishop Chapelle will find it difficult diffi-cult to reconcile many things in the Philippines with American ideas of propriety, pro-priety, if not of Justice. |
