This wooden object with a flat sharp metal blade is about 16 inches in-ches long and eight inches wide. The hole in the center is flanged, indicating that the tool was used to shape an object. What is it? Some say it was called cal-led a "Witchit." Its companion tool was a "nug. " The one pictured was used to shape the spokes of wooden wagon or carriage wheels. The other tool has a wooden center and it was used to form the hub or center part of the wheel. Wheelwrights working in the late 1890s and early 1900s found these tools invaluable. The witchit and nug are on display dis-play in the Layton Heritage Museum, 437 Wasatch Drive, Layton. |
