Show Layton teens arrested in Nevada By GARY R. BLODGETT LAYTON Two Layton teenagers teena-gers accused of fleeing from and shooting at a Utah Highway Patrol vehicle a week ago were arrested Sunday in Wells, Nev., according to a spokesperson for the Layton Police Dept. Lt. Morton Sparks said the youths were apprehended in Wells and were scheduled to appear for an extradition hearing Monday. The pair were arrested on warrants charging them with attempted homicide. If extradited to Utah, the youths will face charges here, according to Lt. Sparks. They will be charged with attempted homicide homi-cide of Utah Highway Patrolman John T. Mitchell, whose patrol vehicle was plastered with shotgun pellets during a chase early last Monday (Aug. 8). Charged in the shooting incident are Jared Valentine, 18,631 E. 20th N., Layton, and a neighbor, Michael Polete, 17, of 610 E. 20th N. Even though Polete is of juvenile juve-nile age, he will be charged as an adult, it was explained. The shooting incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 8 as Trooper Mitchell, on routine patrol, pat-rol, witnessed a red sports car run a stop sign on State Highway 193. Trooper Mitchell said that when he attempted to pull the car over, the suspect vehicle picked up speed and turned south on Fairfield Road, west on Love Lane, then south on Fort Lane Boulevard. The shooting, which included the firing of at least four blasts from a shotgun, occurred just after the two vehicles had turned south onto Fort Lane. The shotgun blasts struck the radiator, left front tire, and front windshield. Pellets also passed through the vehicle and smashed the rear window. The blasts disabled the patrol car but caused only minor injuries from flying glass and debris to Trooper Mitchell. |
