Show Gear down for school safety By GARY R. BLODGETT BOUNTIFUL On Monday, Aug. 29, there will be thousands of children going to and from school. It will be the opening of the 1988-89 school year. "Motorists have not been used to having children along the city streets for the past few months and then all of a sudden (on opening day of school) there are swarms of excited youngsters crossing our streets," said Bountiful Police Chief Larry D. Higgins. "This is the reason we are putting put-ting out a warning to all motorists to slow down and be alert to children chil-dren crossing our streets. Motor-' ists must be extra cautious, because be-cause the kids won't," said the chief. Chief Higgins said all public and private schools will open the same day in the Bountiful area, and several sev-eral thousand youngsters will be walking on the streets and hundreds hun-dreds of teenagers driving to and from school. The chief emphasized that the speed limit in a school zone and at crossings where the lights are flashing is 20 miles per hour. "There will be police officers at some of these crossings at peak hours to enforce the speed limit and to cite motorists who do not slow to 20 mph," he said. The state school bus law for loading and unloading passengers will also be strictly enforced, the chief stressed. He said motorists traveling in both directions must stop when a school bus is stopped and has the red lights flashing. "Motorists should remain stopped until the lights are turned off and the bus has pulled away from the curb." |
