Show I Local track teams analyzed tances, Bountiful's highlights are in relays and sprints. In Senior Mike Cutler, the Braves have one of the fastest in the state. Cutler will earn points in the 100 and 200, and anchors a strong 400 relay team along with Tyler Gee, Ryan Wilcox and Mike Thompson. Those three are also strong in speed events, which is where Bountiful's boys will garner most of their points. 1 Tj By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor The state track and field championships cham-pionships are still four weeks away, but things are taking shape among local high school teams as the qualifying season continues. Overall, Davis and Viewmont are strongest, Bountiful has a number num-ber of outstanding athletes and Woods Cross will certainly see several of its tracksters place at state. Here is a brief team-by-team breakdown of each school, in reverse re-verse alphabetical order this time: WOODS CROSS The Wildcats Wild-cats are not as strong this year as in recent years, with high point scorers scor-ers such as Matt Roat and Carl Ward now doing their thing in college. col-lege. Morgan Brown describes the team he coaches as "real young." Still, there are some standouts. Among the boys, the Wildcats' top threats are distance men Monte Veltman, Mike Smith and Craig Miners. Veltman and Smith in particular par-ticular have had some outstanding times early on. Brown also got a bonus when sophomore Kit Rawl-ings Rawl-ings won the Davis District long jump. Woods Cross is stronger on the girls' side, with all-around athlete Carolyn Knight among the best in the state in the 400. Knight can also run the 200 and 800, and finds success suc-cess as a long jumper as well. Marci Heaps does well in the shot put, and should place in state. Brown also expects to get help from junior Jennie Hendricks in the 800 and 1600, and from Michelle Pollok in the sprints. The Wildcats are rebuilding re-building this year in most other areas. VIEWMONT The Vikings will be tough again, probably dueling duel-ing with Davis for the Region Four include Steve Smith in discus, Martin Pack in the 800, Todd Sherwood Sher-wood in shot and Ben Higbce in the long jump. The medley relay team of mark Ashby, Higbee, Anderson and Bingham will also be strong. Female Vikes in addition to Spendlove and Anderson who should do well include Debbie Weseman in both hurdle events, Karlynn Bloomfield in hurdles, Sharwan Smith in the throws and Marilyn ClilTord in sprints. Becky Yeates will score in the discus, sophomore Kim Blackham should be a force in the javelin, and Jenny Squire will score in long jump, hurdles hur-dles and on relays. DAVIS The Darts are strong as always, with plenty of depth and some outstanding talent for coach John Flint and company. Leading the way are Chris Anderson in the hurdles, Troy Goodsell in the 400, Marc Collings in the 800, Chris Hogan in distances, Sean Smith in the shot and discus and York Major in the long jump. The male Darts have already won impressively at the Weber State Invitational, and it will likely be a showdown between Davis and Viewmont for the region dual title when they meet on April 27. Much of the Lady Darts' hopes rest on the talented shoulders of senior Stacy Field, who earns points in the high jump, javelin, and both hurdle events. Field, a versatile athlete, often runs in relays re-lays as well. Other top prospects include Tracy Pearson in the long jump and sprints, Denise Scott in sprints, DeAnn Sherman in middle distances and Brenda Sanders in distances. BOUNTIFUL At Bountiful, coach Dan Quinn has 90 percent of his team back from a year ago. Just as Viewmont is known for dis- Javelin thrower Brent Smith is among the best in Utah, and pole vaulter Dave Funk should also earn points. Steve Wilkinson will contribute in the high jump as well. The Lady Braves are led by Tiffany Tif-fany Southwick, an outstanding sprinter, along with Chantelle Miner, Min-er, Cody Poole, Danielle Eastman and Amy Wall. Miner is a force in the long jump as well, while Poole may be the best athlete on the team in heptathlon-type events. Pam Austin will lead the distance runners, run-ners, Angie Zollinger will contribute contri-bute in sprints, and Bountiful will get points in the field events from Lori Stacey in javelin and discus, and from Stephanie Reading in the shot, javelin and discus. It all concludes with the state championships at Weber State on May 20-21. Sophomore region will be held May 17 at East. dual meet title, and should do well in state. When you think of the Vikes, you have to think of distance dis-tance runners first. In the boys' division, di-vision, the Vikes have the strongest contingent in 4-A (they won the state 4-A cross country title last October). Juniors Mark Johansen and Ryan Anderson join with senior Steve Barnes for a powerful start. Add to that Jason Wood, Brandon Bingham and Martin Mar-tin Pack, and you know Viewmont will score plenty of points in the 800, 1600, 3200 and 1600 relays. The Lady Vikes also have two ; fine runners in senior Stephanie Spendlove and sophomore Kristin Anderson. Spendlove has done very well in early meets, and Anderson is nearing the form she showed last fall in cross country. Viewmont also has fine athletes in non-distance events. Jared Blauer and sophomore Steve Ballard Bal-lard should do well in high jump, Blauer having already broken the school record in practice. Joe Mar-tineau Mar-tineau will be strong in the pole vault, javelin, shot put and hurdles, and Mark Ashby will also score in the pole vault. Other top prospects |
