Show VMS Alumnus of the month f v jt v I " DR. GREGORY KJAR STEVEN L. NIELSEN and received his B.A. in political science and English. He was later accepted to law school at Northwestern North-western California University where he graduated in 1985. Steve passed the California Bar first year exam in the top two percent and he has qualified to sit for the California Califor-nia Bar Exam this fall. Steve's love and aptitude for music started early, and he was called cal-led upon often to sing in high school. While at BYU, he sang in a Salt Lake City restaurant six nights a week for four years. During that time he also entertained in Las Vegas, at the Utah State Fair and at the National Governor's Conference. Confer-ence. Steve also loves teaching, and he taught in the LDS Church Education Educa-tion System for five years, both at Viewmont and Bountiful High. He has also spent many years working with youth in various church capacities capa-cities and has been a featured speaker at youth conferences at Utah State University and Weber State College. For four years Steve was vice president of marketing and public relations for a movie production and distribution company. He directed the marketing and public relations throughout the U.S. and Canada for the movies "Where the Red Fern Grows," "Joe Panther," and "Seven Alone." Steve has also developed commercial com-mercial properties in Salt Lake and Davis Counties, including Parrish Square Shopping Center in Center-ville. Center-ville. In 1981 Steve founded Nielsen's Frozen Custard. He received a U.S. patent on the Nielsen's Custard Cus-tard Freezing machine in 1986. Nielsen's now has company-owned company-owned stores in Utah and Nevad; and franchises in California, Ario( na, Utah and Florida. Steve has developed a national franchise program and currently oversees company-owned store expansion and franchise sales and management. He is a guest lecturer to business classes at the University Universi-ty of Utah and the Salt Lake Community Com-munity College and is currently building a National Franchise Sales and Training Center in Bountiful. Boun-tiful. Steve is married to the former Dcbra Arbuckle of Centerville. and they keep extremely busy with their five children. Greg and Steve will have their names added to the Outstanding Alumni plaque displayed in the school foyer and will be feted along with the other Alumnus of the Month honorees at the Valkyrie Awards Night April 28 at Viewmont. Dr. Gregory Kjar and Steven L. Nielsen have been honored by the Viewmont High School PTSA as the Alumnus of the Month for March and April, respectively. Greg graduated from Viewmont in 1968 where he was active in all aspects of student life, including studentbody president. He then served an LDS mission to Southwest South-west England, after which he attended BYU on a scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1974. Greg then went on to the medical school at the University of Utah, after which he served his internship intern-ship and residency in general surgery at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan. The next two years of residency were spent in plastic surgery at Providence, Mt. Carmel, and Sinai Hospitals in Southfield and Detroit, Mich. He served his fellowship in craniofa-cial-plastic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and then began his practice there as an associate consultant in plastic surgery. Dr. Kjar now has a private practice prac-tice in Bountiful and is on staff at five hospitals along the Wasatch Front. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of the Detroit Surgical Sur-gical Society, the Zumbro Valley Medical Society, the Davis County Medical Society and the Utah State Medical Association. Throughout his medical schooling and career, Greg has also given many presentations presenta-tions and has been involved in various va-rious research studies in the field of plastic surgery. One of the most rewarding and outstanding of Greg's activities has been his association with Operation Opera-tion Smile, a charitable foundation from the East which goes into third world countries doing surgeries, mostly involving cleft lips and palates. pa-lates. He spent 2V2 weeks in Nairobi, Nairo-bi, Kenya, Africa, in September of 1987, and then 2'A weeks in the Philippines in February of 1988. He also donated his time to perform per-form surgery on a severely burned young Mexican girl, Judith Rodri-quez, Rodri-quez, who was brought to Bountiful Bounti-ful through the efforts of a missionary mission-ary serving in her country. Greg has many demands on his time, but whenever possible he loves to spend time with his family. He also enjoys computers, snow and water sports, and jogging. He ran in the Descrct News Marathon last July and the St. George Marathon in October, 1987. He and his wife, the former Susan Marcum, live in Bountiful and have five children, Kclli, Mason, Kimball, Taylor and Mal-lory. Mal-lory. Steven L. Nielsen, a graduate of the Class of 1966, might be called a "Jack of all trades and master of all." Steve has made quite a name for himself in the business world.
