Woods Cross 4 Viewmont 3 Woods Cross 8 East 1 The Wildcats and Vikings began the season under the lights at Viewmont, View-mont, and the Vikes drew first blood when John Cook took a great cross from David Lauder and scored in the sixth minute for a 1-0 Viewmont lead. But the four-time defending state champions were far from dead. Tommy Angelos tied the game at the 16-minute mark after scoring off a pass from Landon Lewis. Five minutes later, John Allred rebounded re-bounded his own shot and scored to make it 2-1. Just 20 seconds later, la-ter, Allred scored again, giving the Wildcats a 3-1 halftime lead. Viewmont fought back as Jeff Smith scored three minutes into the second half on a header, and the game remained 3-2 until Dave Simon scored on a penalty kick with, two minutes left. Viewmont got its third goal when a Woods Cross fullback accidentally kicked the ball into the Wildcat net, but the Cats emerged with a 4-3 victory. John Allred (1 1 ) of Woods Cross pursues this loose ball during the Wildcats' 8-1 victory on a rainy Thursday night last week. Tommy Angelos (14) scored five of the Wildcat goals, while Justin Shaw, in middle of picture, was impressive on defense and offense. Viewmont 6 Davis 1 Davis 5 Highland 0 The Vikes found the win column Friday, traveling to Kaysville and coming back with a big win. Lauder Laud-er scored twice in the first five minutes, mi-nutes, but Ryan Kynaston tallied for Davis to make it 2-1 Viewmont at the half. Midway through the second stanza, Lauder scored again, and then three quick goals by Casey Layton, David Chidester and Smith turned the game into a rout. Davis opened league play Tuesday Tues-day with a 5-0 whitewash of Highland. High-land. Kynaston and Blake Wilcox both scored twice, while Rob Jacobsen added a fifth goal for the Darts. This week, Viewmont-Bountiful, Viewmont-Bountiful, Highland-East and Woods Cross-Davis matchups were slated for Tuesday, while Friday's Fri-day's games find Davis taking on Bountiful at Millcreek Junior High at 3:30 p.m., and, in a pair of 7:30 p.m. games, Highland goes to Woods Cross and East visits Viewmont. On Thursday, in a game played during a driving rain, Angelos scored five times as the Wildcats thumped East. Angelos scored on an assist from Simon five minutes into the game, then unassisted five minutes later. Justin Shaw took a pass from Allred and made it 3-0 late in the half, and East got a score just before the half after Woods Cross took most of its starters out. Angelos ended any doubts in the second half, with goals in the 1 1th, 13th and 25th minute. Even Woods Cross subs got into the act, as Rob Smith knocked in a rebound of his own shot in the 37th minute, and Mike Broussard scored in the final minute of the rout. Bountiful 2 East 0 Bountiful 3 Highland 0 On Tuesday, the Braves got first-half scores from Gary Olson and Aaron Irvin, then played great defense to open the year with a win over East. Both scores came in the first 20 minutes as Bountiful dominated the game throughout. But coach Dave Wigham said the win was a costly one, as Bountiful lost the services of Jay Jordan for the year with a knee injury. "Jay's been a big part of our program for three years, and we're sorry to lose him. He underwent knee surgery and won't be back. It's a shame, because we just got him back after he overcame a shoulder injury, and we'll miss him this year," Wigham said. Bountiful shutout Highland on Friday, as goalie Dave Went, had another strong game. Adam Bombard, Bom-bard, moved to forward from his fullback position, scored twice for the Braves, while Olson added a third goal. |
