The Jazz Ensemble recently won its tenth consecutive first place title in the Utah State 4-A competition. WX Jazz ensemble takes 1st By DONETA GATHERUM WOODS CROSS For the tenth consecutive year the Woods Cross Jazz Ensemble has placed first in Utah State 4-A Jazz Ensemble Ensem-ble competition. In addition to receiving first place for the best group, the ensemble en-semble also earned a first place award for the best sight-reading band and the trombone section was named the outstanding section in the competition. The competition was held on Saturday, March 19 at Murray High School. Thirteen bands participated. parti-cipated. All the bands had previously pre-viously qualified for the state contest con-test by receiving all superior ratings rat-ings in their regional contests. Besides earning top honors at the state level, the Woods Cross Jazz Ensemble was named the Outstanding Out-standing Band at the Weber State College Jazz contest that was held on March 1 1 . The Woods Cross saxophone section was named the outstanding section at Weber State. Two trombone trom-bone soloists, Lance Rich and Ryan Kunz, were recognized for their exceptionally fine performances. perform-ances. The Jazz Ensemble is directed by Steve Richins. The 28 musicians practice every morning at 6:30 a.m. to ensure their continued success. |
