UTES TUMBLE MOAB 27-6 IN FIRST LEAGUE GAME Uintah High School's football team won its first Region 5 game last Friday Fri-day when they defeated Moab 27 to 6 on the Ute field. Moab kicked off to begin the game. Uintah fumbled, lost the ball and was pushed back to their own one yard line before they could get control of the ball. After the Utes captured the ball, they shoved the Red Devila u om Moab to the other end of the field in six plays to score the first touchdown. Gene Coonradt carried the ball over the goal. Gene made another touchdown during dur-ing the game and the other two were made by Tom Wardell and Ronnie Hatch. In the second half Chris Ax-elgard Ax-elgard had all thirty-three men with suits on his squad in the game. In the backfield outstanding Ute players were Earl Gross, Tom Wardell, Ronnie Hatch and Bob Lef-fen. Lef-fen. Bob kicked over the three extra points. On the line Kenneth Hacking, Gary Knight, Terry Anderson and Lyle McCarrell were playing extra good ball. Uintah's squad made 305 yards on the ground during the game. A hard wind held to a minimum any action in the air. Shepherd, team captain. Six of the golfers on the Vernal team were local Fran Feltch, Corne Asmus, Joe Enos, Deb Casada, Jerry Casada and Shepherd. When the full team could not be made up from the Vernal club, three were chosen from Salt Lake City, Norman Asmus, Chauncey Peterson and Dave Ravenscroft and the tenth man from Todele. Vernal's club will send a ten-man team to Brigham City this Sunday. It is hoped by Shepherd that a full team can be made up of local golfers for these matches. UTES LOSE TO LINCOLN, 6-0 Uintah High School lost its first football foot-ball game of the season Friday afternoon after-noon when the Lincoln team from Orem stopped them 6 to 0 in a practice game at Vernal. The Utes showed plenty of fight and learned a lot in Friday's game, but were unable to attain victory, partly because they were far outweighed and partly because of a weak defense. Coach Chris Axelgard was well pleased with his defense and believes the team will be a good match for anything in the league. Lincoln outgained Uintah on the ground 103 yards to 109 yards, while the Utes led in the air 28 to 20. Lincoln made 40 more yards than Uintah in the game. The Utes received four 15 yard penalties during the game, which forced forc-ed them away from possible touchdowns. Uintah made most of their yardage in the first half and Lincoln Lin-coln took over to make the most of theirs in the second half. Outstanding players for Uintah High Srhool were quarterback IVib Murray, who showed good leadership in the field; Ronnie Hatch running in the back field; Terry Anderson on the line and Lyle McCarrell was the twst defensive man. i The Ute squad is meeting Wasatch High School at Heber this afternoon. The game originally scheduled for Friday Fri-day afternoon was changed to allow the Wasatch team an opening for another game. Wasatch last week beat Judge Memorial of Salt Lake City 18 to 0, a squad that is always considered strong in Region 2, which means the Utes have a tough battle on their hands this afternoon. League play for Uintah begins Friday, Oct. 2 when Moab comes to Vernal. A golf story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Sept. 24, 1953. OGDEN TEN-MAN TEAM WINS OVER VERNAL The El Monte golf team from Ogden came to Vernal last Sunday to win over a local ten-man team, 7 to 6. Scoring by teams was as follows: Vernal's Ralph Ashton and John Rudolph won over Stu White and Max Johnson of Ogden, 2-0; Buddy Orchard and Deb Casada of Vernal won over Lynn Foley and Rusty Bowerbank, 3-0. Carne Asmus and A.W. Shepherd lost to Rube Ellis and Al Domingus of Ogden, 1-2; Orlan Johnson and Ferron Hacking of Vernal lost to Herm Crane and Darel Fowler, 0-3; and Bud Anderson Ander-son and Ralph Rolfe lost to Rick Riberg and Wendell Lebitt of Ogden, 0-2. Following the matches all participants par-ticipants enjoyed a buffet dinner in the Hotel Vernal supper room. A football story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Oct. 1, 1953. UTES LOSE PRACTICE GAME WITH WASATACH THURSDAY 22-13 Uintah High School's football team will meet the Moab squad at Vernal tomorrow afternoon in the Utes' first league game of the season. The game will begin at 1:30 p.m. The Utes lost their second practice game last Thursday at Heber when the Wasatch Wasps defeated them 22 to 13. The Utes also lost one of their tackles, Phil Colton, for the rest of the season when he injured his leg in the Heber game. Friday's game will be Uintah High School's biggest opportunity for victory vic-tory as the Ute squad meets the Red Devils from Moab on their own field. Moab last Friday fell in defeat to the Union Cougars, 33 to 12. Coach Chris Axelgard will start the following lineup. Lyle McCarrell at center, Ken Hacking, guard; Ed Merkley, guard; Gary Knight, tackle; Dwain Hall, tackle; Terry Anderson, end; George Coonradt, end; Bob Murray, Mur-ray, quarterback; Tom Wardell, left halfback; Earl Gross, fullback and Ronnie Hatch, right halfback. If Tom Wardell who was injured in practice earlier this year, is unable to play Friday, Art Lee will substitute. Bob Peterson was listed as alternate as guard; Verlin Vincent, alternate for end and Jerry Cutshaw, alternate for fullback. In last Thrusdsay's game the Wasps blocked two of the Ute kicks to make the difference in the ball game. Yardage Yar-dage for both squads was close and the Utes outplayed the Wasps in the second se-cond half. Ute defense bogged down while the offense was good, in fact much better than in the Lincoln game at Vernal the week before. The Wastach team outweighed the Utes 10 to 15 pounds per man as did the Lincoln team. Quick openers for the Utes looked good in the Heber game with continuous con-tinuous gains from three to five yards. Outstanding offensive players for the Utes were Karl Gross, Art Lee and Terry Anderson. On defense, Ronnie Hatch and Lyle McCarrell looked good. |
