The Uintah Utes were defeated by Carbon Car-bon in the season opener for both teams, 25 to 0, in Price, Friday.. Fri-day.. .pause.. .The Utes had a tough time in the game, but it wasn't all bad for the football Utes. Carbon jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Ute defense closed up the hole and the Dinos scored only six more points in the rest of the contest. The Dinos scored 19 points in the first quarter and six points in the second quarter, but were shutout by the Uintah Utes in the second half. Uintah Utes' Robert Merrill and Bobby Rasmussen turned in a fine job of returning kickoffs and punts in the game for the Vernal team and Brian Smuin got the Utes out of trouble with some outstanding punts. Rasmussen turned in a 21 yard run on the opening kickoff and Merrill carried car-ried the ball 15 yards to- the 35 yard line on a kickoff by Carbon late in the first quarter. Football official, Chester Hall of Price said hello to the ground in the Carbon High School football stadium, Friday. Carbon's Mark Nielson charged charg-ed down the field and went out of bounds at the five yard line. Two Uintah Uin-tah Utes chased after Nielson and also running after the Carbon Dino was official of-ficial Hall. The two Utes crashed into Hall and he landed face down in the dirt. Hall was not injured and he got back up and returned to the game. A number of fine defensive plays were turned in by the Uintah Utes. Gary Swim and Kurt Robb intercepted Carbon aerials and moved the Utes deep into Carbon territory, but the Utes were unable to score any points. Chris Gamble blocked a pass by Car-ten's Car-ten's quarterback Mike Smuin and the Ute dropped Carbon runner, Nielson in the backfield late in the second garter. Rod Gilmore sacked quarterback quarter-back Smuin early in the fourth quarter and a number of Utes teamed up for another quarterback sack. This reporter, Aldon Rachele missed miss-ed the first five minutes of the sophomore game between Uintah and Carbon and I noticed that the score was 7 to 0 in favor of the Uintah Utes. I thought to myself, "Rats, I missed the touchdown." I asked around and no one seemed to know who scored the touchdown. Finally someone told me I think Jon Nash scored it. Penalties and fumbles took away shots at touchdowns in the first half and I thought to myself, "At least Uintah still has that 7-0 lead." I decided to ask one of the managers if Nash scored the touchdown on a pass or a run. The person per-son who I asked the question, said, "He didn't score on a pass or run." I thought, "He must have scored the touchdown on an intercepted pass." However, I found out that nobody scored a touchdown as a few lights were out on the scoreboard and the zero on the Uintah side of the board looked like a seven. The game went from a 7-0 lead for the Utes to a 0-0 tie after two quarters of action. Uintah regained six of the seven points on a touchdown by Mulville in the third quarter and it proved to be the winning winn-ing score as the Utes won the game, 6-0. I contribute the following factors for the success of this tournament: 1 The people of Vernal and Uintah County and their hospitality shown. 2. The quality of the teams and their personnel. 3 And certainly the quality of the officiating of-ficiating for the entire tournament was very good. 4 The best thing that can be said of this tournament was "Even the losers were happy."
