VerneiS Pcmflhers tifaump Rough aiders In Dloosevelf : The Vernal Junior High 9th Grade Panthers had only a one-point lead of 17 to 16 with about three minutes left in the second quarter, but the Vernal team went on a scoring streak in the rest of the quarter and in the third quarter as they outscored the Rough Riders in Roosevelt, 24 to 7, and went on to win the ball game by the score of 53 to 38. The victory over Roosevelt improves im-proves Vernal's record to 15 wins and 0 losses. Vernal gained a 1-0 lead when Brian McNamara hit one out of two free throw attempts, but Roosevelt's Trevor Roberts marched down the floor and fired in a two-pointer for a 2-1 Roosevelt lead. Galen Turner popped in a shot for a 3-2 Vernal advantage, but Jim Trowbridge stole the ball and drove in for a field goal, which gave Roosevelt a 4-3 lead. Clark Emery countered the field goal by Trowbridge with a two-pointer of his own, but Roosevelt regained its one-point one-point lead on an outside bomb by Ricky Nielsen. Vernal and Roosevelt continued con-tinued to match each other's field goals as Kary Hamilton, Vernal, popped in a field goal, and Jim Trowbridge of Roosevelt put in a two-pointer. Trowbridge also added a free throw for a three-point play and a 9-7 Roosevelt lead. The Panthers gained a number of steals and Clark Emery fired in a field goal to tie the game at 9-9, and Brian McNamara connected on a two-pointer for an 11-9 Vernal lead. However, Roosevelt was determined to upset the unbeaten Panthers as Jim Trowbridge and Ricky Nielsen connected on shots to give the Rough Riders, a 13 to 11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Emery burned the net with a field goal to tie up the game at 13-13, but Ted Summeral converted one out of two free throw attempts for a 14-13 Roosevelt lead. A two-pointer by Brian McNamara gave Vernal a 15 to 14 lead, but Trevor Roberts returned the advantage ad-vantage to Roosevelt by tossing two free throws for a 16-15 lead. The points by Roberts were the final points of the second quarter for the Roosevelt team as the Rough Riders suffered a scoring drought, and Vernal popped in ten unanswered points for a 26 to 16 lead after two quarters. Doug Bowen flipped in a field goal for a 17-16 Vernal lead, and two field goals by Brian McNamara, a two-pointer by Doug Allen, and free throws by Jeff Drollinger and McNamara gave Vernal a ten-point lead: . ' ' Vernal continued to blaze the net in the third quarter as they fired in 15 points and held Roosevelt to seven counters. Brian McNamara and Neldon Seitz connected on field goals for a 30-18 lead, but two two-pointers by Trevor Roberts cut Vernal's advantage to eignt points at 30 to 22 with 3:29 left in the third quarter. Galen Turner and Brian McNamara struck for baskets to deliver a 35 to 22 Vernal lead. McNamara also put in a free throw. Trevor Roberts popped in a free throw for Roosevelt, but Jeff Drollinger, Kary Hamilton, and Neldon Seitz hit three field goals in a row for a 41 to 23 Vernal lead at the end of the third quarter. Roosevelt won the fourth quarter as they outscored the Panthers, 15 to 12. The Rough Riders' long bomber from outside, Mike Dastrup, and Trevor Roberts fired in four points in the fourth quarter, and Clark Emery and Kary Hamilton of Vernal tossed in four counters. The final score was: Vernal, 53 and Roosevelt, 38. The top scorer for Vernal was Brian McNamara with 15 points on six field goals and three free throws. Clark Emery tossed in ten points. Also scoring counters for Vernal were : Kary ; Hamilton, 6; Jeff Drollinger, 6; Galen Turner, 6; Neldon Seitz, 4; Doug Allen, 2; Mike Weldon, 2 and Doug Bowen, 2.. Vernal put is 21 field goals, and hit 11 ' out of 20 free throws. Trevor Roberts was the number one--scorer for Roosevelt with 13 points on . five field goals and three free throws. Jim Trowbridge put in seven points, ' and Ricky Nielsen, Mike Dastrup. scored six points. Also scoring pointers were James White, 3; Madsen, 2 and Ted Summerall, 1. Roosevelt put in 14 field goals and hit 10 out of 16 free throws. The Vernal Junior High Panthers will compete in the Craig Tournament in Colorado, Friday and Saturday. Teams from Vernal, Craig, Steamboat Springs, Meeker and Rangely will take part in the meet.
