Show Utes nip Buffaloes on last second shot A shot at the buzzer by Clark McClellan Mc-Clellan delivered an 81 to 80 victory to the Uintah Utes over the Tooele Buffaloes Buf-faloes in Vernal, February 19. The Utes were one point behind Tooele at 80-79 after a field goal by Wes Gross with about eight seconds left. McClellan was triple teamed, but put in the winning winn-ing shot. The win over Tooele gives the Utes a 4-5 record in Region Seven, and places Uintah in fourth place. Uintah is 8-10 overall. Tooele was in a first place tie with Judge Memorial and Jordan, and will drop out of the toD SDOt if Judee and Jordan won their games. The Utes have clinched a tie for fourth place and if Cyprus was defeated February 19 then Uintah will have locked up fourth place. The top four teams from Region Seven will compete in the 3-A State Tournament. Tourna-ment. Uintah led by two points, 22-20, at the end of the first quarter, and the game was tied at 4212, after two quarters. The score was also tied at the end of the third auarter. The Utes had a 68-66 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Tooele tied it up at 68-68. Clark McClellan put in a field goal for a 70-68 lead. Tooele overcame the Ute lead and jumped out to a three-point three-point advantage of 75-72. Two free throws by Derrin Gardiner tied up the game at 75-75, but a two-pointer by Wes Gross gave Tooele a 77 to 75 lead. Burke Buckalew stole the ball and put in a field goal to tie the game up at 77-77. Derrin Gardiner hit two free throws to take the lead at 79-77 with 58 seconds left, and Gross tossed in a charity toss at the 42-second mark to cut Uintah's lead to one point, 79-78. Uintah threw the ball away, and Gross connected on a field goal for Tooele's final lead at 80-79. The Utes drove down the court and Clark McClellan put in the winning shot at the buzzer. The Uintah Utes acquired ownership of fourth place in Region Seven when they toppled the Spartans in Murray, Friday, 62 to 52. The tie for fourth place between Uintah and Cyprus was broken when Jordan thumped Cyprus, 83 to 70. The top four teams in Region Seven will take part in the state tournament. Uintah Uin-tah has a fourth place record of 3 and 5. The Utes have an overall record of 7 wins and 10 losses. Uintah jumped out to a 14 to 11 lead in the first quarter, and had a nine-point lead of 32 to 23 after two quarters. Murray Mur-ray closed the gap to one point, 42 to 41, at the end of the third quarter, but Uintah Uin-tah outscored the Spartans, 20 to 9, in the fourth quarter for a 62 to 52 win. Derrin Gardiner fired in 20 points on nine field goals and two free throws. Burke Buckalew flipped in 18 points on eight field goals and two free throws. Ron Ellis put in 10 points, and Clark McClellan Mc-Clellan scored seven points. Brent Labrum put in five counters, and Joe Gardiner scored two points. Uintah tossed in 24 field goals and hit 14 out of 25 free throws. The win was Uintah's second se-cond victory this season ever Kerry Rupp's Murray Spartans. Rupp coached coach-ed at Uintah High School last season. Tooele nipped Judge Memorial, 74 to 71, in overtime to force Region 7 into a three-way tie for first place between Jordan, Tooele and Judge Memorial at 6 wins and 2 losses. Uintah is in fourth place at 3-5, and Cyprus is in fifth place at 2-6. Murray is in sixth place at 1-7. The Uintah Utes will host the Jordan Beetdiggers, Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the final region contest. The 3-A State Tournament is set for March 3-8.
