Dale Tominaga, 27-0, West, nipped Uintah's Brett Brown, 4-3, for the 98 pound state crown when he gained an escape on the edge of the mat with ten seconds left in the final round. Tominaga pocketed a takedown in the first round for a 2-0 lead, but Brown gained an escape in the second round to cut the West tussler's lead to 2 to 1. Tominaga escaped from Brown early in the third round, but Brown dropped Tominaga for a takedown, which tied the contest at 3-3. First place was captured by Tominaga when he gained as escape near the edge of the mat in the final seconds. Sophomore Jeff Good, 119, Uintah, was 27 seconds away from being a 3-A i state champion, but the referee ' awarded Todd Grover of Bear River his second stalling point of the match to tie up the contest at 2-2. The new life in the match for Grover, which was created due to the stalling point, enabled the Bear River wrestler to gain a reversal and a three-point near fall for a 7-2 victory in the 119 pound championship. Randy Smuin, another Uintah sophomore, battled senior, Jim Bell of Box Elder for the 145 pound championship. cham-pionship. Bell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first round due to nabbing a takedown, and had a 5 to 3 lead after the second round. Box Elder's Bell had been called for stalling, twice, and the Utes were hoping for a third stalling call which would have tied the contest at 8-8 in the third round. However, the third call for stalling was never delivered. Smuin spent a good deal of the third round trying to chase Bell down. Two points are awarded when a wrestler is called for stalling the third time. Bell nabbed the 145 pound title by nipping Randy Smuin, 8 to 6. The most disappointing and upsetting match for the Uintah fans, coaches and wrestlers was the heavyweight championship match between Ken Cobbs of Uintah and Jeff Roylance of Springville. Roylance won the crown when he gained an escape with about thirty seconds left. However, the Springville tussler appeared to be out-of-bounds. A stalling point gave Roylance a 1-0 lead in the first round, but Cobbs nabbed a takedown for a first round lead of 2-1. Two reversals and an escape delivered an 8 to 7 lead to Cobbs going into the final round. Roylance nabbed a neutral with a minute left to tie up the contest at 8-8, but he was awarded an escape late in the match to nip Cobbs, 9-8, for first place. Matt Hacking, Uintah, 138, captured third place when he toppled Mike Gallegos of Ben Lomond, 3 to 1. A neutral gave Gallegos a 1-0 lead in the second round, but Hacking grabbed Gallegos for. a takedown and a 2-1 advantage. Hacking scored an escape in the third round to win the match, 3-1. Hacking advanced into the third place match when he decisioned Craig Cook of Pleasant Grove. Ron Horrocks, 105, decisioned Lance Bushnell, Region 7 champ, 2-1, and captured fourth place when he was toppled by Springville's Kendall Wilson, 12-2. Foston Chivers, 112, was thumped by Cyprus' Aaron Coon, 10-8, and the loss put him in the battle for fifth place with Box Elder's Greg Lones However, the fight lor lifth place was more important than Chivers' match with Aaron Coon of Cyprus. "I told Foston that if he won the fifth place match with Greg Lones of Box Elder we would clinch the state championship in the consolation matches. Chivers fired out and won the match with a 10-1 (Continued on Page 1G) Wrestling champions - - - (Continued from Page 1) major decision, which enabled us to lock up the title," stated Uintah High School wrestling coach, Chuck Henry. The 1980 3-A State Championship is the 14th state wrestling title for the Uintah Utes. "That's a great dynasty. It's hard to beat anywhere. The reason for the success we have had in winning state championships is because of the overall program we have in Vernal for wrestling," stated Chuck Henry. "It starts with the little kids in Tiger League, continues in junior high with the great job that Leon Smuin does and then into the high school. The community com-munity of Vernal plays a big part." |
