Louisville coeich io conduct clinics The Louisville Cardinals captured the 1980 NCAA national basketball championship cham-pionship and the coach of the number one college basketball team, Denny Crum, will be in Vernal on Wednesday, July 2. Crum will instruct girl and boy hoopsters in clinics from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., fifth grade through junior high and from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, high school, in the Uintah High School girls' gymnasium, July 2. Crum will hold a coaching session in the Vernal Junior High auditorium from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and he will speak to the general public in the Vernal Junior High auditorium from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Crum, who is in his ninth year as the Cardinal mentor, guided Louisville to its second straight METRO regular season title, to first place in the METRO post-season tournament, to a fourth straight NCAA trip and to first place in the national tournament. For the second straight season Crum was selected as the METRO Conference Con-ference Coach of the year. Crum has posted a 219-55-record in nine years at Louisville 'and "Has" 'a' T799" 'winning record, which is second only to Jerry Tarkanian among the most winning active ac-tive major college coaches. He has averaged over 24 wins per season by gaining 20-or-more wins in each of the campaigns. A 43-year old native of San Fernando, California, Crum attended Pierce Junior College before becoming an award winning guard for John Wooden at UCLA. After graduating from UCLA in 1958, he stayed with the Bruins as freshman coach before eventuallj returning to Pierce Junior College as iU head coach. Crum returned to UCLA in 1967 as Wooden's top assistant and chiel recruiter. He stayed with UCLA until his move to Louisville in 1971. He succeeded suc-ceeded John Dromo as the Cardinal head coach. Since his arrival at Louisville, Crun has taken Louisville teams to sevei NCAA tournaments and to two Nil meets. The Cardinals placed fourth in 1972, third in 1975 and first in 1980 in thi NCAA national tournament. Louisville became the first team ii the history of the METRO Conferenci to go undefeated at 14-0. The startinf lineup consisted of one senior, Darrel Griffith, who is the top draft choice o the Utah Jazz; three sophomores am one freshman. In addition to his coaching duties a the University of Louisville, Crura Thai become one of the most popular clink instructors and banquet speakers iri thi nation. He has also coached teams in in ternational competition. He directe the 1977 USA team to a gold medal ir the World Univeristy Games in Sofia Bulgaria. The Louisville Cardinals finishec with an overall record of 33-3 during th 1979-80 season. They posted a homi record of 16-0 and had a 17-3 mark oi the road. One of the Cardinals' losse during the season was to the Univerist; of Utah in Salt Lake City. |
