Show Public meeting on communications system slated A public meeting on future telecommunications service in Utah will be June 30 at 1:30 p.m. at the Utah State Educational Center in Roosevelt. The meeting is to determine what local needs might be served through an advanced two-way microwave system which would link regional centers with other areas in the state. The proposed system would allow two-way video, audio, and data transmission. Several possible uses for the system, already under consideration, include applications ap-plications in the fields of medicine, transportation, public safety, law enforcement, social services and public radio and television. The meeting is being coordinated by the Media Services Division of the University of Utah, in cooperation with the Utah Departments of Transportation Tran-sportation and Public Safety. Representatives of these organizations will explain the present microwave system, which currently serves these state agencies and KUED-TV. Channel 7, and will outline the proposed additions ad-ditions to the system and possible applications. N 5 If implemented, the system will be used for training purposes, teleconferencing tele-conferencing the ability for people from several areas to meet face-to-face without being in the same place), sharing of audio, video and computer information, and a wide variety of other services. The system has the potential of providing rural areas throughout the state with access to information and resources presently available only along the Wasatch Front. The proposed system would also allow information sharing among the state's institutions, linking together the state's colleges and universities. Funding for the system will be sought from the State of Utah with matching funds from the federal government. If funded, the system will be in operation by the summer of 1982. |
