Chamber service award presented to pharmacist The Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce Com-merce Outstanding Public Service ; Award for the quarter ending June 30 was presented to J. Harvey Madsen, Tuesday noon at the Chamber's directors' meeting. Glenn Cooper made the presentation ' and told of Madsen's background and j community contributions. The public service award is given in recognition and appreciation for outstanding leadership and significant service to the Chamber of Commerce and to the community. Madsen was born May 31, 1926 in Fountain Green, Utah. He married Vonneal Curtis of Moroni, Utah and they have five children and 11 grandchildren. grand-children. Madsen has been an active scout and scouter, serving one year as scoutmaster, scout-master, one year on the Uintah District Scout Committee, and about 20 years on troop committees. Madsen was in the turkey business for two years in his youth and marketed about 2500 turkeys each year. He received his State Farmers Award from USU his senior year in high school. He entered the armed forces in December 1944 and trained at Camp I Roberts, California. He was sent to j Leyta and then to Luzon where he was assigned to the 112 Cavalry Regimental Combat Team as an 81 mm. mortar gunner. He was in Tokyo Bay on VJ Day and was a member of the Army of Occupation. Upon his release from the Army, Madsen attended Snow College in Ephriam, and the following year enrolled in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Utah. While attending the U he worked for Moser-Hartman Co. and the Salt Lake Tribune. He graduated second in his class, was elected to Phi Kappa Phi National Scholastic Society, and received the Merck Award for Scholarhip. His family then moved to Vernal, where he worked for Glenn Cooper at Vernal Drug. Madsen was a member of the Vernal Kiwanis Club and secretary and president of the Vernal Knife and Fork Club. He served 13 years in the Vernal Third Ward Bishopric as a counselor to Samuel Woolley and Alvin Bowden. and was a member of the Uintah Stake High Council, where he worked in the youth programs. He then served as counselor to President Glade Sowards of the Vernal Utah Stake, and Madsen is presently counselor to President Irvin Haws of the Vernal Utah Stake. Madsen has been active in the Utah Pharmaceutical Association, serving on the Board of Directors for seven years, one year as vice president, and president in 1971-72. In 1976 he was honored to receive the "Bowl of Hygia Award" for community service in pharmacy. He was Utah's delegate to the annual meeting of the American Pharmaceutical Association for three years, 1970 in Washington, DC, 1971 in San Francisco, and 1972 in Houston. Madsen is an active supporter of the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce and has served on various committees. He was a director for two terms, and is a past president of the Chamber, serving as president in l6-67. Madsen has also been active in local government, serving throe four year terms on the Vernal City Council. During much of that time, he was chairman of the Recreation Committee and Vernal City Planning and Zoning Commission. He served ten years as chairman of the Uintah Recreation Association and two years as a director of the Utah League of Cities and Tow ns. At the present time, he is president and manager of the Vernal Drug Co., a director of the Vernal Investment Co., and a member of the Vernal City Planning and Zoning Commission. |
