Recreation report update on Flaming Gorge area This year's wet spring season has brought out the wildflowers in abundance abun-dance at Flaming Gorge. Some plants have flowered at lower elevations, but many blossoms remain. The main bloom is on at about 7000 feet and progressing upward, according to Ashley National Forest officials at Flaming Gorge. Trails from Browne Lake to Elk Park have been maintained and are open. Youth Conservation Corps Employees are doing the work and are presently working on the Little Hole Trail, which has been open for some time. Trails from Dowd Mountain Overlook to Hideout Boat Camp and Carter Creek are open and dry. At higher elevations, trails are muddy with snow encountered at about 9500 feet. The mosquitoes are out. High mountain trails are not expected to be snow-free until about the fourth of July. Road maintenance has been completed. com-pleted. All other facilities are operating except for the following:- Spirit Lake Campground (The Lodge and road are open.) The water system at Hideout Boat Camp is not operating. The flush toilets at Firehole boating area are down because of a sewage pump failure. (Adjacent vault toilets are operating.) Fishing for mackinaw has been good in the reservoir, with the elevation currently at 6016 feet. Full pool is at 6040 feet above sea level. Fishing has also been good along the Green River, below the dam, since an outstanding opening day. Maximum flows from the dam have been about 2,600 cfs with lows of 900 cfs. Average flows have been from 1,500 to 1,800 cfs. Weekend flows have been lower than this average with weekday flows higher. During weekdays, flows usually increase around 9 a.m. and decrease about 12 hours later. Area Ranger, Bob Meinrod and his staff hope you have an enjoyable summer at Flaming Gorge: "" |
