Show Chamber Awards Scholarship Chamber of Commerce met in regular session at the Legion Hall, with President Pearl Baker presiding. The award of the $150 scholarship was announced as having been won by Miss Cindy Swasey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Swasey. The By-laws were amended to end the fiscal year on December 31, and to allow the Vice President to counter sign checks. The new typewriter loaned by the Times-Independent has arrived, and Secretary Phyllis Engleman expressed her pleasure plea-sure with the convenience of it. The old cemetery back of the Green River Motel was discussed, dis-cussed, and it was reported ' that the Boy Scout troop has taken it as a clean-up project before Memorial Day. Most of the meeting was taken up discussing the Visitor Center being planned for part of the Peacock Rock Shop building. Mrs. Baker reported that--She and Tim Anderson, chairman of the Travel Council committee had examined the building, and made arrangements arrange-ments for the use of shelves, etc. Mrs. Peacock will clear the area near the "Soor for setting up a brochure display. Mason Snow was hired to paint the signs; he will start as soon as the wind dies down a bit. The plywood will be painted on the Rock Shop premises, and Joel Martone will start lettering the signs as soon as they are ready. There will be a meeting of the Castle Country Travel Council at Lemieux Cafe on the 26, and the committe of Tim Anderson, Mrs. Barbara Battey and Eugene Mantle will ' meet with them to firm up the Visitor Center for this saason. It is hoped that the Center at Thompson will be open for next year's tourists. After considerable discussion discus-sion with Bruce and Homer Nelson as to when the best date for Melon Day can be . set-too early and there are no ; melons, too late and the frost ; has hit-it was finally decided ' that the first weekend after the ; 15th of September will be the I date each year. This year, that ' date falls on September 18-19, ; and Laddie King will schedule : the Motocross for the 19th. ; Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Battey : and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene j Mantle attended the Travel ; Council workshop at Moab on : Friday. : ' |
