Minn. d'.l:i Fort j Snc'ling, in its 120 years as a United States military garrison, has made a rather unusual rec- ord no battles have ever been fought within, its province, its cannon have fired at no foe, and no enemy has invaded its portals. The garrison's History goes way back to the days of the Louisiana Purchase when in 1805 Lieut. Zcbulon Pike's treaty acquired land on which it is located. The I fort was established following-Lieut. following-Lieut. Col. Henry Leavenworth's expedition up-river in 1819. i Fort Snelling has had no skirm- j ishes with the Indians, whilei neighboring garrisons had numerous numer-ous battles with warring Red Men. At present 2,050 troops live and train in its barracks. , |
