Show First Ward M Men Take Fourth Place in All Church Tourney The Springvilie First ward M Men basketball squad added laurels to their stake championship champion-ship honors during the state M Men basketball meet in Salt Lake City last week. The team rolled up one of the highest scores in all M Men tournament tour-nament history on the last night when they defeated the Ogden Fourth, 62-2S. They tried hard to beat the scoring record for the tournament which was 63 points. Every man played in every game with all the energy and basketball technique which he could muster up. While some had better luck than others, each showed expert skill in the manner in which he held down his particular position. The local team which entered the tournament as a second place team from the Provo division having hav-ing met defeat by Manavu at the district finals in Spanish, rung up an excellent record winning three out oi four games, losing only to the Salt Lake Eighteenth warders in the second round. They came home with Fourth place. In commentating on the Springvilie Spring-vilie team's performance a Salt Lake paper stated "the Springvilie Spring-vilie First ward is one of the hardest hard-est fighting teams in the tournament." tourna-ment." Members of the team included: DeVere Weight, rf ; Matt Olsen, If; Thales Brown, c; Bert Cher-rington, Cher-rington, rg; George Bird, lg; Douglas Doug-las Brown, Woodrow Weight, Gordon Gor-don Pierce and Hoyt Baxter. The team members were not alone at the tournament. One of the largest crowds of townspeople townspeo-ple ever to attend a single game in Salt Lake City boosted for the Springvilie boys each night. |
