Show HIGH ASPEI fil iHKJpST Ore Encountered in West Contact Outside Well Explored Ex-plored Mineral Vein. The rich strike of silver ore on the Oakland in the Aspen, Colo., district, from which assays of 164, 177, 178 and 6,000 ounces of silver have been obtained, according: to the Rocky Mountain News, has created interest, not only in the district, dis-trict, but throughout the btate, more perhaps per-haps from the fact that the ore was encountered en-countered outside tho well-known ore zone than for its richness, and in what is now being recognized as the "west contact." The Oakland is situated on the east side of the west fork of Queen's gulch on a porphyry ridge west of and running parallel with tho great silver-lead belt. In the gulch east of this ridge is the Midnight or Contact tunnel, probably 150 feet from the Oakland workings and about 100 feet deeper than the tunnel that has created such an interest. The successful outcome of operations on the Oakland will mean great things for adjoining properties, especially for the Midnight company, whose tunnel is only about 150 feet east and 100 feet lower than the Oakland. A "west contact" would seem to be no longer a theory, but a condition, as prospecting has about conclusively proven that a porphyry intrusion occurs between the limestones and sandstones from the point of West Aspen mountain to Mount Hayden, about fifteen miles south of Aspen. This porphyry uplift is very pronounced pro-nounced just south of Tourtelotte park and crossing a deep depression a little west of the portal of the Midnight tunnel tun-nel forms the high ridge upon which the Oakland is situated. On to the south this dike crosses the course of the Hope tunnel, widening out, crossing Castle creek into the Salisbury hill, continuing to Mount Hayden, apparently the center of the great upheaval. It is the opinion of many that the great porphyry uplift near tho Little Annie Mine split the ore-bearing lime belt, forcing forc-ing one part to the east and the other to the west, the west branch crossing Castle creek near the Hawkeye bridge. Prospecting of this immense dike shows that in close proximity to the lime belt the ore values are high in silver, while at the Eclipse group of claims, six miles i to the south and near the sandstones, ' high-grade copper appears. To a close observer, other than a "mine expert," it ; appears that in certain localities the porphyry dike has come up through the lime belt, while in other sections it I seems to have slid in between the lime- j stone and sandstone formations. j |
