The official ball of the Na- tional league is made with a cork cen- ter. The price of this cork has doubled. I and a special thread used has increased j almost three times. The cork-center I ball was patented August 31. 1909. It weighs five ounces and is nine inches in circumference. This bail will be used in all games played in the National Special to The Tribune. RUPERT. Idaho, Oct. 4. The Rupert baseball club is the undisputed champion of the state, as a result of the locals' victor- over the Burley team on Wednesday, September 24. The club has certainly had a successful season, and quite a number of players have been under un-der the surveillance of various organized league scouts. A resume of the season follows: The w-inner of the championship of the Southern Idaho league decided .the championship cham-pionship of Idaho and northern Utah. Rexburg, as winner in the Yellowstone-Snake Yellowstone-Snake River Valley league, eliminated Logan, champions of the Cache Valley league, in a post-season series. In turn, Burley played a series with Rexburg, and, assisted by the Rupert battery, Evans and Shandling, administered a decisive licking to the Rexburg club in three out of four games. Boise won in the race for honors in the Boise Valley league, and the Rupert team eliminated Bo:se from all consideration when they defeated Boise at Boise. Burley won the first half of the split season of the Southern Idaho league, and Rupert won the second half. In the post-series, post-series, Burley won the first game from Rupert at Rupert by a score of 2 to 1. The second game was played in Burley on Wednesday, September 24. Rupert won the game bv a score of 4 to 0. After the eighth inning, Sherwood, Burley's official umpire for the series, announced to the grandstand that Burley had refused to play the deciding game and. therefore, forfeited the game and series to Rupert. "Rube" Evans pitched the major part . of the games for the club during the; sea-! sea-! son and won nine of ten starts. He was : unable to take part in the championship series on account of having, his shoulder blade broken after the Boise game. j Ralph Stroud pitched the last three games of the season for the club, and deserved -to win each time. He won two games and lost one. In the twenty-seven innings he pitched he allowed but nine , hits and struck out thirty-five. During the season. Rupert won eighteen league games and lost four, winning all exhibition games played outside of the : league. Burley. Rupert's closest con- tender for the season's honors scored thir- , ty-nine runs against fifty-six by the local club. Of the nine games played with Burley, Rupert won five and Burley four. Several players on the club have been under ' surveillance of organized league ' scouts. Osborne Johnson has been of- fered a contract by Eddie Herr of the j Salt Lake Bees. Johnson is a former West high athlete of Salt Lake City. He led the league in home runs this season. ' i |
