Show SENATE PREPARES TO HURRY ACTION ON PEACE TREATY WASHINGTON, Oct. 4. The trend of developments today in the peace treaty situation still was towards rapid progress on amendments and reservations. The senate was not in session, but leaders held numerous conferences. The Shantung amendments are to be taken up formally Monday and Kepublican leaders lead-ers think it possible that all amendments be disposed of and consideration of reservations res-ervations begun in a week or ten days. A movement to have a definite date fixed for the vote on the Shantung amendments was made today by Senator Kenyon, Republican, Iowa, chairman of the senate labor committee, which is investigating' the strike. The committee wishes to visit the strike district next week and Senator Kenyon said he would try to arrange for a formal agreement to vote on the amendments "Wednesday or Thursday. When the Shantung amendments are disposed of, Republican leaders plan ,to take up the amendments of Senators Johnson. California, and Moses. New Hampshire, Republicans, bearing on tiie equalizing of the voting power of the league of nations of the United States and Great Britain and her colonies. Senator Sen-ator Johnson, who ia on tho Pacific coast, was advised today, some Iraders said, to return hero within a week. Other Republicans Re-publicans said they knew of no recall of the California senator, but doubled whether he would fill dates in Washington Washing-ton and Oregon. The Johnson amendment is to be discussed dis-cussed at length Monday by Senator Mc-Cumber. Mc-Cumber. Republican. North I'akota. who has offered a reservation designed to cover tho same ground as tho Johnson amendment. Further conferences on the reservations were held today by former President Taft with Republican senator favoring so-called "mild reservations." It was said that a reservation on the Shantung Shan-tung provision would be offered if the amendment hy Republican Loader Lodfcft relating to tho Shantung award waz rc-I rc-I jected. |
