Show PROMOTERS GO AHEAD Will BOXING PLANS Intend Staging' Monster Affair at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 26. NEW YOpIf, Nov. 13. Definite arrangements ar-rangements ,wll shortly be announced for the monster boxing show to be held in Madison Square Garden, probably on November No-vember 26, i in1 the Interest of the War Work fund. 1 Those In charge of the local bouts already lhave procured the promise of every metropolitan fighter of note to take part in the entertainment, and James Coffrotb, national adviser, has partly promised that the pugilists of national repute re-pute will be brought to New York to help out. It is hardly possible that Jess Willard. the retired heavyweight champion, can be brought to New York to help the local committee, since he has announced that he cannot find time from his business affairs af-fairs to make the long trip. It was the hope of Hilly Gibson, Charley Harvey and Charley Doesserlck that a heavyweight match could be arranged, with Willard meeting one of the logical contenders for his title In a- six-round bout here, but Willard has not consented to this and will not. Jack Dempsey. who has been on the trail of Willard since Dempsey flattened the hopes of Fred Fulton, the Minneapolis plasterer, hae'made fnmtlc attempts to get a match "with Willard. He Is willing to meet the champion in a New York ring or, for Uiat matter. In any ring that the War Work fund committee cares to build In any part of the country. It is thougjit that Croffroth will try to get permission from the war department to gather tle loading boxers from the many army and navy training camps and match thes; men in the benefit bouts. Since the navy camps have picked men to represent America in the London boxing box-ing tournaments, Coffrotb is of the opinion opin-ion that tliese men should he given a chance to show their mettle before making mak-ing the loirs Journey to Kngland. jlm Coffroth sends word of a big double main event . for the New York show that will be staired Saturday night, November 16. Benny Leonard, lightweight champion, cham-pion, Is to meet Patsy Cllne in the main event over a ton-round limit. This bout will be at catchwelghts, as Leonard has not the time In which to train dowh. Tile other big number will see Kid Ted Lewis against Soldier Bart-fleld. |
