Show MUNICIPAL PARKS TfiACTSJJTHORIZEO Commission Plans Buying Jordan River and Sugar- house Properties. An appropriation of $31,000 for the purchase pur-chase of sixteen acres of land on the east bank of the Jordan river and five acres in Sugarhouse, on the banks of Parley's creek, both tracts to be converted Into municipaal parks, was voted yesterday by the city commission. Commissioner Herman H. Green presented pre-sented the motion for the appropriation, expjaining to tho commission that he had suceeded in obtaining short-time options op-tions on the west side property from more than thirty owners of lots in the tract, which is known as Muscatine place. The tract is bounded on the west by the river, on the east by Eighth West street, and extends along the river 860 feet from Fremont Fre-mont avenue. Entrance to the Sugarhouse tract Is at the junction of Highland drive and Eleventh Elev-enth East street. ' The ground adjoins other city property adjacent to the state prison farm. Purchase is being made from the Young Cemetery association and the Crismon estate for 5600C. The west side tract costs J25, 000. The only opposition to the action was voiced by Commissioner Karl A. Scheid. who questioned the wisdom of tho outlay of the funds at this time. Improvement or both tracts, especially that on the west side, to make them available as public parks is to he undertaken early in the spring, it Is understood. |
