Show TRAIN-LIMIT LAW IS ViGIDOSJAYS GALVIN President of Union Pacific System Visits Salt Lake on Way to Coast. A protest "was registered vosterdny by President E. E. Calvin of the Union Pacific system against any legislation which would interfere with the operation opera-tion of freight trains in Utah as now conducted, Mr. Calvin having in mind the proposed legislation to limit the number of freight cars in train to fifty. ''Laws limiting the number of cars in trains," eaid Mr. Calvin, '"are vicious at any time and particularly under present con Hit ions in the country, coun-try, when the railroad? are try ins t o move the necessaries of life. The parage of such legislation at this time would be little less than criminal. It is unfortunate that the public has not a better understanding under-standing of the present question. It i? a well-known fact among of liters of the railroads, and employees also, that the proposed legislation is polelv to force the railroa-ds to employ more men by running more trains. It rarply that I have anything to say about prospective pros-pective legislation, but this is virion? and uncalled for. ' The railroa d situati on generally, ' continued Mr. Calvin, ''would soon improve im-prove if the weather became settled. There have been short periods of just as severe weather in former years, but never in my e.Yperience of forty ypar? in this intermountain country has it extended over the entire winter, as it has this J-ear. In the vicinity of Laramie Lara-mie and" Fawlins we will erect this summer three or four miles of cement snowsheds. At Rock River at the present pres-ent time we are building timber snow-sheds, snow-sheds, and one thing is sure there will be no recurrence of the blockades in that section next winter. "The railroads are preparing tn cooperate co-operate with tho government,' said M r. Calvin, "in any eventuality that mav arise. A committee of eighteen railroad presidents, of which I am a nv-mler, expects to meet the national defense committee in Vashlngton within with-in the next ten days to consider definite defi-nite plans. I will be present at that meeting. The government some time aco sent a messace to all the railroads of the United States apking for a description de-scription of their shop plants, with the charrLcter of tool? and efipa'itv of manufactured man-ufactured stel product. They have that information from the Union Pa cific noT in Washington.'' Mr. Calvin, who is Hccompanied bv ri in private erretarv, P. R. Kk'dnn, ex-Pf ex-Pf ted to lertvo for Los Angeles last night, but ars prevented from doing so by reason of the snow blockades. |
