Pershing was formally appointed ap-pointed commander of- the southern department de-partment today to succeed Major General Gen-eral Freierick Funston. The appointment appoint-ment take effect immediately and does not require confirmation by the senate. sen-ate. EL PASO. Feb. 21. Major General John J. Pershing received a message today to-day from Major General Hugh L. Scott, chief of staff of the United States armv. announcing the appointment of General Pershing to be commander of the southern south-ern department, taking the place made vacant by Major General Frederick Funston's death. General Pershing has planned to leave here tomorrow evening for San Antonio, where he will take charge of the department depart-ment of which he has been In temporary tem-porary command since the death of Genera Gen-era Funston Monday night. While no announcement lias vet been made. It Is expected that Brigadier General Gen-eral George Hell. Jr.. will resume command com-mand of the El Paso patrol district. In the telegram announcing his appointment ap-pointment General Ncolt also sent his personal congratulations to General Pershing upon his appointment. |
