This s the second contest in oratory that Miss Bacon has won during the past year, as she was victorious last spring jn the Stephens medal contest. "The New American'' was the subject of her effort yesterday. She took the ground that all immigrants should be educated to become valuable American citizens. She gave statistics to show that at present there are three million foreign born whites in this country who are unable to speak the English language. The cities of Philadelphia and Cleveland were giH'n as examples of what had been done in regard to educating edu-cating foreigners juid a plea was made for other communities to take up the work which in- time would be of great value to the United States. The D. A. R. medal was presented to Miss Bacon by Mrs. G. V. Lawry, a member of the society, who took occasion occa-sion to compliment her highly upon her effort. The judges in the Daughters' contest were Mr. W. R. Tyndale, Mrs. K. L. Janes and Mrs. J. Laben. Many members of the organization were present pres-ent and were highly pleased with success suc-cess of the annual affair. Mr. Axelrad took for his subject ' ' Compulsory Military Training in the United States." He argued that this would make the country still more Democratic, as all classes would work side by side on an equal footing. Many other points were brought forth in support sup-port of his theory. The committee of judges consisted of S. A. R. members who are interested in the education of the younger generation gener-ation in elocution. Those who decided the winner wore L. R. .Swaner, Bovd Park, Judge M. L. Ritchie and H. J. Fitzgerald. Professos Georce K. Fellows presented the medal to Mr. Axelrad. and commented com-mented briefly upon the value of work along this line to a high school student and urged its continuance. |
