Show CAMP LIFE LESSOR GIVEN TO CITIZEi, Taken on Tour of Inspection Inspec-tion of Tent Homes of j Coast Artillery. TRIP MUCH ENJOYED Also Undergo a Most Thorough Thor-ough Inspection Themselves Them-selves During Day. Tim onfi fundamental Icon of miH-tfiry miH-tfiry life, which the citicn Mnhlirs have not hoc ii ivcn ami which other similar sim-ilar camps have had in tho tent liffi, tin t.hfi attendants at tint Fort Douglas ramp tiro, housed in hairackn. Yesterday, Yes-terday, however, fliey wd'O iven a Icsmoii in camp life that wa.1 really better than the actual things t'or tiiey worn taken on a tour of inspection of the model ramp in which the members of the three coa.st artillery companies lire living. Tho coast artillery eamp wan laid out as a model, and unless a rather close inspection can 'ho, qui to mislead inj; tho camp certainly ha.n fulfilled its purpose in every wav. The camp is laid out with mathematical and military prc-ciHnnoHfl, prc-ciHnnoHfl, and possesses every element of nani tat ion, com fort and convenience ilint the host equipped camp could have. Tho company Ht roots worn located by u trajisit and 'oven tho tent, poles aro in perfect alignment. Tho kitchen and dining room tents aro floored, screened and hoarded at tho sides, and tho officers' of-ficers' tents aro located in accordance with tho strictest military requirements. require-ments. Kach of tho pyramidal touts occupied by tho regulars is na clean and comfortable, as hijh efficiency and economy of space can make it. s a Model Camp. Tho washrooms and shower Kiths are. apart and excellently equipped. n short, tho camp is a "model one. Yesterday Yes-terday morning the citizens "were taken through tho camp, from tho officers ' tents to shower baths, and had each detail of the arrangement and location explained. With the tangible model of ramp to soo ami tho clear explanations made hv tho company commanders, almost al-most any one of the" citizens could u out tomorrow and lay out a camp that would meet, the military requirements. Manv were the favorable comments made by tho citizens coneerning tho immaculate appearance of this ramp of regulars and tho ingenuity nhown by tho regulars in tho arrangement of their personal possessions and equipment in t he small space a f forded. Before the oiti.en soldiers went to inspect tho model camp of the regulars thov had an inspection themselves that, while not perhaps so exhaustive, was, at least, much more disconcerting to certain of the lazier among them. The inspections were made by the company commanders and included both tho squadrooms and the equipment of the soldiers, as woll as their personal nppcaraneo and, above all, the contli-t contli-t ion of their rifles. Previous notice had been given to tho recruits of the inspection and many of them spent hours after dark in furbishing and refurbishing re-furbishing their rifles, shining their shoes, washing their clothes, arranging their equipment and puzzling over the best practico of assembling the whole. Inspections Thorough. Their work was not without reward, for the inspections were severe and there are not a few of the citizens who1 are doing the dreaded extra kitchen duty because of a dusty rifle or a pair! of "impressed trousers. Pome of the most spick and span members were heard to murmur low-voiced low-voiced protests at the desecration of going immediately into the dusty fields wheTo their work of the previous evening even-ing was wholly undone. But the principal prin-cipal murmurs came at the tent-pitching hour, when tho blankets, towels, clothing and equipment had to be deposited de-posited plunk into the dust, ,iust like rhe regular soldiers have to do when thev are out on marches. A verv groat improvement both in technique and speed was shown by the recruits in the tent-pitching. And, though it is hardly probable that anyone any-one has over counted every piece of the equipment that must be handled, it is certain that most of the citizens thought that the number had been decreased de-creased by several hundred after their Hocond experience with the tents. It took the members of company B iust fifteen minutes from the whistle's blast till the last tent peg was driven for overv file of men to pitch its tents nnd have the contents of haversack, blanket roll and cartridge belt out in front ready for the inspection made by the officers. Practical Lessons Given. Aside from the tent-pitching and in-8 in-8 pee Hon of the regulars' camp, yester-terdav yester-terdav morning was spent in practical lessons of fire control and attack by companies. The simple signals necessary neces-sary under the tumult of an attack under un-der fire were taught to the men nnd then used practically by them for purposes pur-poses of demonstration. The afternoon was a holiday, as to-dav to-dav and tomorrow will be. A telegram tele-gram was received yesterday afternoon from the headquarters of the western division at San Francisco announcing that the citizen soldiers would have Labor day for a rest. Although the citizens will not be required to put in an appearance at camp until tomorrow tomor-row nicht at 1 1 o 'clock, special arrangements ar-rangements have been made bv the officers of-ficers in charge to conduct rifle practice prac-tice for such of the students as desire to participate. Tomorrow morning will be given over to thor-e students who have not yet fired on the iust ruction course and to those who have not completed their work on that course. In the afternoon the ranges are used for further instruction instruc-tion course work a nil if time permits for some firing on the record course. Tn view of tho keenness of competition compe-tition that has been aroused among the camp attendants in the individual rifle shooting, it is expected that overv ov-erv man who thi nks ho has even a ghost of a chance to make the hiiihet score will be out on the rano practicing. prac-ticing. A meeting will be hold shortly short-ly by the citizens training camp committee com-mittee to make a further effort to secure se-cure more prizes. The Tribune gold medal for the high- est score made in the individual Tifle competition is being made especially for the camp bv the Leyson-Pearsail company aud will be on exhibition at Port Douglas early this week. It is as yet the only prize offered. State Senator Frank Evans was compelled com-pelled to resign from the camp because of business matters in California, and I before he left he expressed his regret at tiie departure, for. he said, the experience ex-perience and training that he has got-. got-. ten in the past two weeks at the camp j have given him the most profitable 'fortnight that he ha ever had. There are a lot of others who feel as Senator L'vans does. r e r h a ps tho re aro a few t o da y who would not be o,uito so enthusiastic, but that enn be attributed to the second inoculation in-oculation for typhoid that was eiven ! to more than 100 yesterday afternoon. |
